If you are setting up a new project, please don't use heartbeat. It is no longer developed and it has no future. You should use corosync and pacemaker. Under pacemaker, there is a good tutorial called "Clusters from Scratch"; http://www.clusterlabs.org/doc/en-US/Pacemaker/1.1/html/Clusters_from_Scratch/ It shows you exactly how to setup a virtual IP. If you have trouble with this, please reply and include your configuration and any helpful error messages.
