In some cases the power down command is implemented very similarly to
the actual power switch, which must be held for a couple of seconds to
power off the machine.  Meanwhile, the acpid recognizes the push of the
power switch and initiates the shutdown sequence.  If the sequence is
quick enough, it may even terminate before the machine is forcefully
powered down, and you can't tell the difference from a soft shutdown.
But usually the power off interrupts the shutdown sequence, leading to
some confusion (it confused me a couple of times at least).  You may
want to check whether you're in a similar situation.
