They are all As these days. Either NS16550AFN (there was a suffixless
version, then each suffix was added in turn), or the newer name
PC16550A.

What error is it?

Don't use /dev/cuaX; they are obselete. Use /dev/ttySX instead.
Linux 2.2 does not support /dev/cuaX any more.
