Hi All, here is a note from a local friend unable to subscribe to
Linux-hams due to being behind a BBS to the Internet. Here is his
message:

Why does Linux command:
/sbin/ifconfig bc0 up
cause the Linux message:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied
or why does Linux command:
/sbin/ifconfig bc0 hw ax25 1 up
cause the same Linux message:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied
Have a Tigertronics BayPac BP-96A plugged into the parellel port.
At boot time the following message displays:
Baycom....

ANSWER:
Re-compile the kernel without,
Parallel Printer Support []
PLIP (parallel port) Support [].
lp1 and bc? cannot share the parallel port located at 0x0378.
Thanks and 73, Nate.

I'm guessing that had the support he lists above were built as modules,
they could be unloaded before the par96 module were loaded. Here is a
dumb question, but where in the kernel source tree can I find the
various error strings such as SIOCSIFFLAGS: Permission denied? I
presume this message is generated by the kernel (please be gentle!)?
Also, on a distantly related subject, how can the proper name for a
module alias be determined for /etc/modules.conf (conf.modules)? I
tried searhing what I thought were relevant source files with no
success. It turned out my worry was unfounded as the module(s) in
question were being loaded, but led to this question.
Thanks,
73, de Nate >>
