Since I received this TNC friday I have made several discoveries
and sent it back to AES for exchange. But here is what's germain:
1. Making a cable to connect the TNC to the RADIO is still a full
blown pain in the ass. The plugs and wires get smaller and smaller as I
get older and older.
2. The book is really very good in most sections, but poorly laid
out. Having 1200 and 300 baud packet and Pactor in the same box makes the
book large.
3. I tried 300 baud packet on 40 meters and my minicom was killed
by stray rf into the computer. I then tried 20 meters and did copy well
some bbs traffic using FBB compression that minicom didn't like.
4. Tried transmitting packet and called CQ several times but no
contacts.
5. Switched to Pactor and immediatly found a station calling cq. I
answered him and there was some problem but then it worked just fine. But
the other station had to use receiver incremental tuning to copy me. I was
transmitting about 500 Hz off my receiving frequency.
6. Decided to re-tune the TNC to get receive and tranmit on the
same frequency. This did not work. I followed the tune-up steps exactly
and it did not respond properly.
7. On Monday I called MFJ and a guy named Tom said it was broke.
So I called AES and sent it back to them. Will get another next week. I
hope it works because I don't want to make ANOTHER cable!
Best wishes
