Firstly you could check the eye pattern with a scope, if one is available of
course, if not you will have to try changing jumper settings on your modem
to alter the pattern and play it by (what the results produce).

I am far from an expert on telling others what to look for, it is my
personal experiance that PLL radios work far inferior to XTAL radios, i use
or i should say both radios in question here are Motorola MC80's broght at
dump prices and converted for 9k6 packet. The only thing i had to realy play
with on one radio was the IF stage, the other worked just like a new radio
"out of the box", after re alineing the different stages of course.

Well i was taught to use packet size's starting with 4 8 16 32 64 and
multitudes thereof, 512 is one of those.
We could use a higher rate, however considering the results we achive we
dont.

Its not only your stn, who will need to reconfigure, but of course your
link partner also.

If you require further information, please reply directly to me, as this
discussion will only get more and more "off topic".
