Thanks to all the kind souls who responded privately (and you should
have had a little note back from me), and it looks as if along with
yourselves David has identified two major points - a later ELF aware
version of gdb is a little more promising, but it still looks as if
debugging info needs to built in at make time.

Unfortunately, none of the ax25 utilities were built with the debugging
symbols so my guess would be:

cd to the directory with file called  core

gdb -c core

  at the (gdb) prompt:

backtrace
