Normaly one would use minicom to get the TNC into kiss mode.
If you have never used minicom start it with the 'minicom -s' that will
allow you to change or set serial paramters and comports.
Then after minicom has started use;
kiss on
restart
depress ctrl-a then x to exit minicom.
Now you can use the ax25-utilitys.
If the need arise to get the TNC back out of kiss you can try.
kissparms -p<port_name> -x
BTW: minicom is very simalar to the old dos programs 'telix' and 'procomm'
