Yes the docs are out of date, but still usable.  

With 2.0.36, you do not need any ax25-modules patches. 

ax25-modules-2.1.42a is still the latest.  There are some problems getting
it to compile with glibc/libc6, but precompiled packages exist for both
Red Hat (at contrib.redhat.com) and Debian (as part of the 2.0 and 2.1
distributions).

(see the HOWTO for the reference on this).
