Not to fan the flames, but here's something more than a little related to
the recent discussions here.

Subject: [aprsnews] *** General Announcement Concerning APRS Issues ***

To: APRS Community
4/13/99

As everyone is well aware, a discussion (sometimes heated) concerning
issues related to the future of APRS has been occurring on APRSSIG
during the past two weeks. In order to be more productive and take
some heat off the SIG, the APRS software authors have agreed to the
following:

o The authors have agreed not to publicly discuss the issues or
make announcements regarding the issues on an individual basis
until the Dayton Hamvention, May 14-16.

o The authors have agreed to meet face-to-face during the weekend of May
1-2 to discuss and resolve the issues. The following are attending the
meeting: software authors, Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, Steve Dimse, K4HG,
Keith Sproul, WU2Z. (Authors Mark Sproul, KB2ICI, will be out of town,
Brent Hildebrand, KH2Z, and Mike Musick, N0QBF, will be participating
in the electronic discussion before and after the May meeting.)
Also, attending will be Greg Jones, WD5IVD, and John Ackerman, N8UR,
representing TAPR and moderating the meeting.

o The outcome of the meeting will be announced before the Dayton
    Hamvention.

In a related matter, it was announced early this week that Bob Bruninga,
Keith Sproul, and Mark Sproul are starting on the initial draft of a to be
published version of the APRS protocol. Further information on this
subject will be announced after the May meeting.
