Hello, hoping this forum can help with a very basic Linux problem.

I'm currently using a Caldera openlinux distribution (older ver 1.1)
which basically uses the RedHat 4.2 RPMS packages. TNOS is setup on
Linux and all PPP links to the internet are done thru TNOS's
PPP dial-up server. Therefore, Linux is in the background and tunnels
thru a slip link to TNOS for internet connections (sorta backwards, but
it works).

Now for the problem: I'm unable to get Linux to send files qued for
printing to the PRINTER (epson-9 pin) using the command: 'lpd filename'.
Instead, Linux sends the following error message:

[root@jeifer /root]# lpd testx
lpd: Fatal error - Another print spooler is using TCP printer port, possibly
lpd process '8911'

When I check "ps" to kill process '8911', there's no PID with that ID
listed. Wondering why 'lpd' thinks there's another spooler active on a
printer port that's called "TCP"? Might Linux be trying to use the slip
link to TNOS to find a printer?

I have used the 'printtool' to configure the appropriatate parameters.
The commands: lpr, lpq, lprm all seem to work. I notice from the
usr/spool/lpd/ps/status.ps log that Linux thinks the print job has been
"successfully" completed, when in fact nothing has been sent to the
printer. Here's what the 'status.ps' log looked like after I qued a file
using the command: "lpr filename"

It seems I can manually type the command "pr filename > /dev/lp1" and the
file is successfully printed! The problem is getting Linux setup and
using the print spooling correctly.

Anyone have any thoughts on this one?

Thanks,
