Just to muddy the waters a bit....

I use a 486dx2-80 (Cyrix) and have *never* had any problems with
kernel compiles.  Currently running 2.2.5.

I'd suspect a hardware problem, or a problem with the motherboard
chipset not working correctly with the non-intel CPU.
