Sounds like you are having problems with the power derived from the
serial port.
This is a well known problem of the yam modem.
Check the +5V and -5V on the modem, if the voltage drops too far, the
YAM freezes.
This might be the reason even if it worked with the older mcs version.
There are some ideas for external power supplies available.
