new axlib?

Hi,
there has been talk about new ax25-utilities and a new axlib.
I'd like to know if the new library will be source-compatible with
the old and what else is going to change. There is software
around which depends on libax25, will it break? 
And will the new ax25-utilities work with Matthias dg2fef's
reimplementation of the kernel-ax25 which is getting usable now?
(and is actually used be some people in everyday operation).
