Newbi Question

I know this is a very elementary question but I need some assistance so I
don't mess things up:

I have RedHat 5.2 and I have installed ax25-utils-2.1.42a-1.i386.RPM (by the
way I found the file at
http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM/powertools/5.2/i386/ax25-utils-2.1.42a-1.i386.
html). I also have the HAM HOW-TO but it
appears to predate the RPM file.

The question is how do I proceed from here? Bear in mind I have never
recompiled a kernel before.
