The YAM is definitely a good choice.
Ways better than soundmodem or baycom at least. (imo)
If you are able to do SMD-soldering i recommend you look out for the SMD
Version
of the YAM.
This is a slightly modified design which has no problems with voltage
breakdown
on the serial port anymore.
Probably you can also get a ready-made SMD-YAM.
