I'm a bit new at this, but I don't quite understand why assigning an 
IP address would have anything to do with his layer 1 device problem.
Please explain the relationship. 

For now, I must echo Hamish's request (to the original poster) ... what 
are the specifics of the ax config commands? And what steps were taken
to prepare the kernel, etc.

I've been working with some older stuff that I have on hand here, kernel
2.0.33, with good success. Soon, I expect to tackle RH 6.0.
