The mixer program actually writes a zero out to the register in question.

I hope I am not misrepresenting Tom here. He told me that the setting
of the input gain should not be necessary, as they do not affect
recording, only the audio which is going out the speaker output.
smmixer writes zero to that register so that the input is not heard on
the output. That makes sense if you are using VOX mode for PTT for example.
My setup did not appear to work until I modified smmixer to let me
set that register. I might be mistaken. I may experiment with it
further at a later date.
