About point to point comm thru AM

Hi, I'm new to mailing lists so sorry if this is in the wrong list...

I'm trying to send digital signals appx 10 kms computer to computer. Would
an AM IC (both TX and RX) be better or would FM be better? A bandwidth of
around 50-100 kbit/sec would be enough. Can I build the circuit with
transistors only?? And would I need a crystal???
