I've just had a look at some pretty handy real-time DSP software
for the sound card; it has various predefined filters (low and high
pass and notch), and also automatic heterodyne removal. Pretty nice
since my old rig (IC-726) doesn't have DSP and I'm not about to fork
out for one that does.

The only hitches are that it's not free, and it's for Windows.

Does anyone know of anything like this running on linux? I know
a bit about DSP fundaments, so I might be interested in working
with some people to develop something.

(Actually, I'd rather off-load it to the TI 320C31 DSP starter kit
I own, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of support for that
among amateurs, and I haven't had time to port any code yet.)
