I set up my linux box to talk using kiss mode the other day. However, I seem
to have a problem connecting (and transferring data) to one of the local nodes
(running x1j4).

When I send a packet, I seems to usually miss the first packet the node responds
back with but gets the second.

Example (out of listen):
radio: fm N2POR-7 to TROY-7 ctl SABM+ 03:30:03
radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl I00^ pid=F0(Text) len 93 03:30:05
0000 TROY:N2TY-1} }.Try typing "BBS" for N2TY BBS or Type "H" for Hel
0040 p..Type "DX" for DX Activity.
radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl RR0+ 03:30:12
radio: fm N2POR-7 to TROY-7 ctl SABM+ 03:30:13
radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl I00^ pid=F0(Text) len 93 03:30:15
0000 TROY:N2TY-1} }.Try typing "BBS" for N2TY BBS or Type "H" for Hel
0040 p..Type "DX" for DX Activity.
radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl RR0+ 03:30:22
radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl RR0+ 03:30:27
radio: fm N2POR-7 to TROY-7 ctl SABM+ 03:30:33
radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl UA- 03:30:34

radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl I00^ pid=F0(Text) len 93 03:30:35
0000 TROY:N2TY-1} }.Try typing "BBS" for N2TY BBS or Type "H" for Hel
0040 p..Type "DX" for DX Activity.
radio: fm N2POR-7 to TROY-7 ctl RR1v 03:30:38

I'm missed the packet:
radio: fm TROY-7 to N2POR-7 ctl UA- 03:30:34
the first time.

Now it keeps trying and usually recovers, but it seems every exchange has the
same problem. This makes the connection very slow and flaky.

The mode's on the node are:
0 0 6 2 0 30 0 450 3 600 1 27 3 1 1 3 3
which looks like it is using a 300 ms key-up delay (30*10)

I know I don't have the best RF path because I live in an apartment in an RF
hole but I get the second packet just about all the time.

Sometimes it works better, sometimes it doesn't. I can't tell if it's related
to moving the antenna, what time of day I do it (I avoid times when other
people are on the node), which program I use (call or a packet network mapper
I'm working on), if I use kiss or just the TNC software, or what.

I was just wondering if someone with a bit more experience with this could tell
me what the problem is? Possibilities I've thought of include:

1. my radio is just too slow switching from transmit to receive.
2. some unknown kissparms option.
3. some unknown TNC configuration (before putting the tnc in kiss)
4. some config problem with ax25 on linux.
5. problems with RF (path/antenna location)
6. something totally different.

I'm almost assuming it's the radio switching speed, but sometimes it has worked
better than others.

System info:
TNC is a KPC3 running in open squelch mode (I did "cd internal" before I put it
in kiss mode)

Radio is an Yeasu FT-530.

Linux system is redhat 6.0 with kernel 2.2.11 with ax25 compiled as modules
later (I didn't think I could get into a node, so I didn't have it configured,
and I didn't want to reboot the machine at the time).

ax25 software:
ax25-apps-0.0.4
ax25-tools-0.0.5
libax25-0.0.7

Thanks for any help you can give me and if you need more information, feel free
to ask.
