 Thanks for your help with this.
I have ax25ipd running now.

I have sym links setup as:
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           10 Sep  3 08:24 axip ->
/dev/ttyS0
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           10 Sep  3 08:24 axipd ->
/dev/ptyp0

with the following in rc.local

/usr/sbin/kissattach -i 44.56.20.25 -m 512 /dev/axip radio

and

in ax25ipd.conf

device /dev/axipd
