Hi ! I also had some problems with the soundmodem on my Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT and the Alinco DJ-G5 dual-band handheld TRX. Only very few packets were decoded. I then used the smdiag tool and found out that the 2200Hz tone (for 1200 baud packet) was too weak compared to the 1200Hz tone. I solved this by a series capacitor to the LINE IN of the laptop (3.3n in my case). This high-pass (together with the input impedance of the soundcard) equalized the tone levels and now it works fine. A medium RX volume seemed best. Don't forget to use smmixer to correctly set up the input source (LINE or MIC), and the levels. You may be able to hear back the signal on the headphones output. Also, be aware that the RX signal is best fed to both (stereo) inputs of the soundcard or if not possible that the unused input is grounded. Regards, Andreas. -- Dipl.-Ing.
