I don't see how you did your initial setup in these message fragments but usually I run xf86config (all lowercase) which is a script that asks a bunch of questions and then writes XF86Config. What kind of card are you using? You say it locks up, you do know about control-alt-backspace to exit X, and also control-alt-F1 to return you to the first virtual console (text command prompt) without actually exiting?
