This isn't really a hams-only thing; it's mainstream now. You just buy
some hardware which is supported by your kernel (try doing a make xconfig
to see what all the options are) and use it. Hams do have the privilege
of souping up the commercial spread-spectrum hardware to do longer-distance
comms but if this is just an in-home network you won't need to.
