It has been a long time friend here. But I suffered about the same
you have suffered until I "discovered" it.

Using xfbbC, I include the -f switch, so it filters out those control
characters. Actually, I wrote a script to make it simpler to connect
to FBB:
# !/bin/sh
#
cd /fbb/bin
./xfbbC -c -f -i co9bqq -w password
The problem here was showing up while reading some messages that were
"unreadable". I still don't know how people manages to generate those
"unreadable" messages. The -f switch took care of it.

I also installed JNOS (Linux) to take care of TCPIP in a traditional
way (it behaves better than bare Linux TCPIP when the channel is
shared with AX.25 users set up with agressive parameters) and can
use it very often as my packet console. I added a local, loopback,
software port so FBB and JNOS can talk AX25 on that port. You still
have no backscroll, but it works in a stable way.
There is a problem for me, and I am still puzzled, even when I have
an intermediate solution. When I do a "=callsign" the way out is
Ctrl-Z, and the job gets suspended...finally I understood what
happens, so I do a "fg job_number" and I can get back to the xfbbC
screen. Is there a any better way of doing this, finishing a chat
without being caught in this trap ?
Also, I have not found the way to use XFBB as my Yapp-C client. I
have been forced to use "call", but then, I must "prime" it to send a
file pushing Page-Up, if not, it only connects and sends nothing, and
I do not understand what is going on. Trying to put a file into a
users Winpack or TSTHOST can get to be uncomfortable, while it was a
cinch with FBB 5.15c. Any hints about this ?
