Hi. I'm assisting my local Sherrif's office w/ Linux matters. They
already use Linux in several places, and have found it to be VERY good
for those tasks.

Currently they use a MDT (mobile display terminal) system which consists
of a laptop plugged into a TNC which runs some special client software.
They speak AX25 over the air (9600 baud) (on their own, non-ham
frequency) and into their system.

They now have newer TCP/IP client software that they use over CDPD.
Unfortunatly CDPD is too costly to deploy into every car, so we are
trying to extend their existing system to carry TCP/IP.

They would like to use a Linux system as a AX25 network gateway. For
this purpose we need to get Linux talking Kiss to their existing TNCs.

We replaced a rom in the existing TNC with one which is supposed to talk
kiss.

I configured AX25, but I am unable to see any traffic (using the sniff
program) or generate any traffic (with the beacon program).. I get
transmission timed out messages.

As I understand, the TNC units were made by Paccom for another vendor,
and the SO has not had a lot of luck getting it to work.

It is possible that the rom we are using is incompatible, we're running
at the wrong baud rate, or anything really.

Is there anyway I can tell if the TNC is speaking kiss properly? I never
see anything come out of the serial port if I use open up minicom and
turn on the TNC.

I have one of the TNC/Radio's here (at home) with me, and I'll provide
any needed information. I'd really appricate any help or pointers.

Thanks.
