I would suggest not using Linux in the solar car.
Instead, use whatever minimal hardware you can get away with to
regularly send a signal, with 3-4 times redundancy at least.
If you decide you need a computer to do this, of course Linux is an 
excellent choice.

I'm not against Linux at all .. it's just that   I believe you can
probably get away without using an extra computer.
