APRS on USGS Topographic Maps!

Just an idea folks,

I've tinkered with APRS for a little while now, and noticed that most of
the maps are for the most part "road" maps.  Is there a way to either
port, or create from USGS maps, topo maps for APRS.  I have a limited
knowledge of GPS, but I think some models of GPS units will also
indicate altitude of your given position.  This would be quite a neat
feature if its possible.

Any thoughts?
