I have had a Yaesu FT-847 over a year, operating at home, Field Day, and mobile. It
covers the HF bands, 6m, 2m, and 70cm. My experience is that it is a good all-band
box. 2 other local hams bought their FT-847s about the same time - no complaints. If
you buy a used unit be sure the firmware is at least revision G - the prior revisions
lacked some connectivity through the RS-232 port. (I have revision K in the firmware.)
I have not worked with the similar Icom box.
My son and I use the MFJ 1278B and Kantronics KAMPlus TNCs for packet. No complaints
about either of these units. We have bought second-hand 2m radios that we use for the
packet connections, leaving the FT-847 free for SSB, FM, etc.
Good luck, and good hamming. 73's
