ARP Timeout problem

Hi Folks, can anyone point me in tthe right direction ?

My system (Suse6.3), when initiating any tcpip/radio session sends out 3
very rapid ARP requests
then, more often than not, times out before the remote end has had chance
to reply.

Can I lengthen the ARP timeout ?
