the call command

i use suse-linux-6.4 and try to get qrv with packet radio,
using the soundmodem. i can listen to the digipeater
db0bln, with the call command i can connect to it,
but when i try to get a shell with ~! everything
disappears. this is especially annoying because there
is no disconnect and when i call db0bln again there
comes the answer "the address is already in use".
can somebody help me?
