Well I'm getting close(er).

mgetty answers the modem
AutoPPP , I think is trying, but looking at the ppp log I see something
like...

"peer is not authorized to connect to  remote server 192.168.0.1 "

FYI: 192.168.0.1 is the machine I am dialing in from. 192.168.0.2 is the
machine I'm dialing in to.

I suspect that this has to do with pap authentication between machines.
I'm very confused as to how to adjust the files to fix this.
