Please read my old thread, "HELP! Kernel 2.0.36 / Aic7890 problems".
I also had a lot of timeouts until I decided to change some SCSI Bios
options, especially the "device speed" options. Most CDROMS wont constantly
send data faster than 20 mb/sec, so you might try to lower that value and
see if it works better now, and you might try to switch from synchronous
transfer to async. transfer (slower, but more reliable).

Go to the any RedHat mirror and look inside the update/upgrade
directory; you must find XFree 3.3.3 that supports Riva TNT.
You need to download these rpm:
XFree86-100dpi-fonts-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-75dpi-fonts-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-SVGA-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-VGA16-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-XF86Setup-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-devel-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
XFree86-libs-3.3.3-1.i386.rpm
then upgrade with rpm -Uhv *.rpm and run XF86Setup to put the right
card.
I did this and I've everything working (I've a Diamond Viper 550).
Remember that the right server for Ndivia RIVA TNT is SVGA.

Subject: Re: Linux, SMP and Compaq SystemPro

Tim,
The Compaq SystemPro uses Compaq's TriFlex architecture for SMP. That is
why under NT and SCO you need Compaq specific implementation of SMP to be
able to see the second processor (Compaq Triflex HAL etc). The older Compaq
servers eg, System Pro, Prosignia 300 500 and VS, Proliant 1000 1500 2000
4000 4500 all uses different version of this technology.
The newer Compaq servers Proliant 5000 6000 6500 7000 2500 etc all use
standard Intel SMP architecture.
The bottom line is : Linux SMP will not work on the Triflex based machines
untill the specs for that is made public.
Hope this helps.

FWIW, the K6-2/400 isn't the only K6-2 using the new core. I'm
sitting at a 333 with the new core right now. Still, the value is

If you use a 2.1 or 2.2 kernel with pppd version 2.2.0f, have a look in
linux/Documentation/networking/ppp.txt
The error message I had in /var/log/messages was something like

Date: 11 Jan 1999 13:02:14 +0200
We currently have two BT-950 (Flashpoint) UW SCSI adapters in a dual
PII 450 MHz machine. One adapter has three Seagate Cheetahs, the other
two. One disk is root, the remaining 4 comprise one raid0 partition. I have
been benchmarking, and while speed is excellent, I am worried about
the cpu consumption. Bonnie says
-------Sequential Output-------- ---Sequential Input-- --Random--
-Per Char- --Block--- -Rewrite-- -Per Char- --Block--- --Seeks---
Machine MB K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU K/sec %CPU /sec %CPU
2000 8629 98.0 58084 80.2 22013 70.8 9037 96.7 52675 89.3 405.4 7.2
Even block writes use 80% of cpu. I also used time(1) on this Bonnie
process, and it reported that 40% of the cpu comsumption was system,
60% user.
Iozone reported similar speeds but system cpu consumption was 95%,
user cpu 5%. Is there any way to determine, what that system cpu usage
is? Is it mainly Linux raid implementation's overhead or is it the
Mylex drivers?
I tried also with raid5, and cpu consumption was about the same, plus
the md_thread process taking around 13% of cpu.
Finally, it would be nice to know if upgrading to BT-958 is worth the
price differential.

Neither, unless you have a different idea of 24x7. To me 24x7 means at least two
different boxes, each with RAID.
Anyway, I'd be chasing the disk space and extra memory and pick the Intel. I've
had Linux uptimes of over 400 days on intel, and that shutdown was planned and
scheduled. (had to move the box).
Thost Sparc 20s are nice though. Well built too.

Hi Andrius,
If u just want to use X , try the generic XF86_VGA16 server. It works
for me(though it 's not pretty). You need to install the driver as
default . I then used XF86Setup to configure XF86Config. Everything
worked hunky dory. Im sure I can copy u XF86Config if u get stuck,

This may work. Note, I did say for a _trouble_free_
installation do the above. Keep in mind XFree86-3.3.3
is linked with the libs from XFree86-libs-3.3.3 and
_not_ the libs from XFree86-libs-3.3.2. This may be
a non-issue, but it may also give you instability if
certain changes have been made to the new libs.
In general, it is not a good idea to mix packages from
different releases.
Also, the original poster is having a hard time
producing his XF86Config file. He _needs_ the
XF86Config/VGA16 3.3.3 to create it, as again the
G200 was _not_ supported in 3.3.2.

Hello!
I just picked up a Sun Sparcstation 2 with a Sun GDM-20D10 monitor. Soon
after I booted the machine up I noticed two thin black lines running all the
way across the monitor. One is roughly 4" down from the top, and another is
about 4" up from the bottom. I originally thought it may have been a cable
problem, but reseating and/or flexing the video cable has no effect.
I've heard that all (older? circa 1995?) Trinitron tubes exhibit these thin
black lines, but I really hope that is not the case. They are VERY noticable,
especially once you become aware of them on a bright background .. I recall a
Sony CPD-1304 monitor I had quite a few years ago developing this problem
after a few years of use. I never investigated the issue with that model as I
moved up to a larger unit. This 21" GDM-20D10 seems to have a very high
quality picture (with the exception of the two lines) so I'm hoping there is
a fix for this problem!
The machine is running Solaris 2.5 and I hope to soon install Sparc Redhat
Linux.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

> Sorry my ignorance - but what's that?
Short for Logical Volume Manager. A concept apparently pioneered by
Veritas and picked up by the major commercial Unices (specifically I
know of AIX, Solaris, DU, HP-UX, and IRIX) and being developed for
Linux. Defines a different way to allocate, access and manage file
storage volumes on disks. Key features (I refer to the AIX
implementation here, about which I know the most):
- A volume group, which acts as a sort of meta-partition, if you
will, can comprise multiple physical disks. These can also provide
redundancy not unlike RAID mirroring, as well as plain striping.
The sysadmin can add disks to an LV at will, and take them away.
- Inside a VG you have logical volumes, which are allocated from the
VG like files in a filesystem. Like files, these can be resized,
moved, copied, renamed, etc. They can also be mirrored. Each LV is
a block device.
- On an LV you mkfs a filesystem. Since the LV is a block device this
works just like traditional partitions/slices, except that LV's are
so much easier to manipulate.
- Some filesystems commonly in use with LVM's support resizing. AIX's
JFS, for example, lets you grow it without unmounting. This would
not be very useful with traditional disk partitions or slices, but
makes life much more fun for the sysadmin when the filesystem is on
a (resizable) LV. Wish /home were 80 megs bigger? No problem: have
the system allocate 20 more 4-meg "blocks" for /home's LV, assuming
the VG has that many available. If not, first add another disk to
the VG....
And one more feature that can save a lot of headaches in some
circumstances:
- Disks are recognized not by SCSI ID's or whatever but by a VG
signature. LV's contain a certain amount of metadata as well, so
/etc/fstab is not really needed to figure out what partitions mean
what.
Anyway as I said, an LVM is being developed for Linux. Current release
is 0.4 and is available at ftp.msede.com:/pub/linux/lvm/ . It was
released back at kernel version 2.1.103 or so; don't know how much has
changed since then that would involve the kernel patch portion.
