I already found out, that the DVD-drive is not supported (no drivers
yet). But since the DVD-drive is also reading normal CD-ROMs I would
like to know if Linux can read them and I can boot Linux from the CD-ROM
in the DVD-drive.
If anyone could help me I would be happy.

I built a new machine a few months back using a AMD K6-2 350 and a FIC
PA-2013 mainboard and the only complaint I have is the FPU is a little
sluggish when doing tasks like running filters on a 100meg multitrack
wave file, but other than that its been a great stable box. My
considerations when making a purchase were that I wanted a MB + CPU
running at 100 MHz FSB, and the AMD was so much cheaper that it allowed
me to allocate more money for better components (No more cheap ram for
me, I've had enough signal 11's to last a lifetime) so I could build a
better balanced box. Overclocking is definitely possible, the FIC
PA-2013 actually has a insane 124 MHz bus setting (I do not know of
anyone who has tried it) though I wouldn't recommend you do that with a
server unless you are doing a job under an assumed name.

Valid devices fro ftape are: [n]qft[0-3] and [n]rawft[0-3]. However
documentation says that Ditto works as device number 0 only.
Don't use system built mt command. Get ftape-tools and use ftmt, e.g. like
this:
ftmt -f /dev/qft0 status
Manual pages for mt and ftmt are different so check them.

I recently purchased a second computer to fool around with and was
planning on putting Linux on it. The problem I have is that it has a
6.4 GB IDE hard disk. With the large number of cylinders and the fact
that the partiotions do not end on "proper" boundaries, I cannot use
LILO. Has there been a fix for this? I looked, but was unable to find
one. It has been a while since I last installed Linux, and I don't have
a completely up-to-date version. I was using the BARE bootdisk. Is
there a different one I should use or a more current version?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
it has nothing to do with your graphic card. It's the 24 Bit mode of
XFree that Netscape doesn't understand. If your card has enough memory
try the 32 Bit mode. That should work fine.

Hi again!
I have NT 4.0 on the first partition. I had before a second partitions
to
NT 4.0 which is now removed, I think its /dev/hda5 becaus the disk size
is
equal.
/dev/hda1 Boot Primary DOS FAT16 [NO NAME ] 1539.57
/dev/hda5 Logical DOS FAT16 (big)
535.50
/dev/hda6 Logical Linux 941.07
/dev/hda3 Primary Linux Swap 63.00
I use the procedure below to add this removed partition to linux.
In fdisk I delete /dev/hda5 with the "d" command, then create new linux
partition with "n" command. I choice logical type (becous I want use
this
space to applications) and where it's should start and where it's end
should be, I select the numbers of cylinders what fdisk recomended.
This partition should be exactly in middle of two another partitions.
When I entered p command I could notice that /dev/hda5 and /dev/hda6
changes
size so /dev/hda5 get the /dev/hda6 size and /dev/hda6 get the /dev/hda5
size.
After I done all this I use "w" command to save the new configuration.
Fdisk
recommende me to reboot, which I done. But now when my pc rebooting I
get the
following message:

Subject: Moving SCSI Targets
Date: 13 Jan 1999 10:11:49 GMT
Hi Everybody,
I was wondering whether somebody might be able to help me with a problem
that I seem to be having with regards to the identification of my SCSI
targets and the device names that they are allocated.
Currently, at work, we are working on a system which has both an
Internal Adaptec SCSI controller and an additional SCSI controller from
DPT which controls the RAID array.
During the install of Redhat Linux 5.2 we specify both the internal SCSI
controller and the EATA/DPT RAID controller device. Once installed,
Redhat probes the SCSI bus in the following order:
* Internal SCSI hard drive (9Gb) /dev/sda
* External RAID device (27G) /dev/sdb
This is fine so far, the root system lives on /dev/sda.
The problem comes into play when we recompile the system to provide SMP
support for the second processor. During the recompile, we specify in the
configuration scripts that we have both a internal SCSI adaptec controller
and the RAID array. Both SCSI devices are compiled into the kernel as the
RAID module array is broken in linux.
The only problem is that when the system has finished compiling and the
new kernel is rebooted the order in which the controllers are found
changes. This results in the following problem:
* External RAID device (27G) /dev/sda
* Internal SCSI hard drive (9Gb) /dev/sdb
This causes a problem because our root filesystem is no longer on
/dev/sda but on /dev/sdb.
I am aware that Linux kernel supports the concept of dynamically
re-arranging the order in which devices are probe in order to preserve the
/dev entries allocated to them but this can only happen on file systems
which are clean.
The device can be "renamed" through the use of the following sequence
pointed out in the SCSI-Programming HOWTO:
echo "scsi remove-single-device ....." > /proc/scsi/scsi
echo "scsi add-single-device ........" > /proc/scsi/scsi
The problem is that I need a script to be present in order to
make these operations work, but they can't work because the file
systems are not clean.
Does anybody have any ideas ?
See ya
Dean Thompson

Hey! quick question.
current setup:

motherboard has:
3 PCI slots
slot 1-vid card
slot 2-voodoo 2 g-acclerator
slot 3-Lucent 56k v.90 (winmodem DOH! Not supported in Linux?!)
2 ISA slots
slot 1-empty
slot 2-empty
QUESTION: I plan to get a new modem and a buy an ether net card..
Thus, if I want to keep my voodoo card, either my modem or my ether net
card will have to be ISA.
Which would you go for, a) ISA modem, PCI ethernet, or b) ISA ethernet,
PCI modem?
Thanks

a), of cource!
Why the hell you would require a transfer-rate of 133MB/sec when your

And even 10MBit-Ethernet cards will need more bandwidth in
fullduplex-mode than ISA can deliver ...

The PERC (Power Edge Raid Controller) is just an AMI MegaRaid card,
which is supported by 2.0.36 and later. To install to a system
equipped with a PERC, get the megaraid boot.img and supp.img from
ftp.megatrends.com (I think thats the ftp site..)
With those disks, suddenly the AMI Megaraid is listed as an available
controller to install from. While I havent tried this on a 6350, on
older systems with same card, it works fine.

Unlike most hardware with "win" in the name, the Winchip works fine for

Of course you can use LILO with any size of HD.
You read the Large DISK Mini-HOWTO, didn't you (available at e.g.
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/Large-Disk)
In the worst case (if you BIOS is to old to support LBA) you can still
create a small boot partition below cylinder 1024 and boot from there.

The 2048 bytes/sector support is needed for

To apply the patch is pretty easy:
Just cd into the directory with the kernel source and gunzip the file

This should work for your SCSI drive

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I mean how do I remove the vfat loadable module
from the bootup process, it's the line that says
Loading vfat lp lp0 ...
and so on.
I already removed the /etc/fstab lines that mounted my win95
partitions. I had set that up to be noauto anyway so that wasn't the
problem.
I assume the vfat module is 'vfat.o'? Maybe I should do a grep on my
/etc dir for that string...
I chose support for vfat during the installation of Debian 2.0. Maybe
it recompiled the kernel during the installation? (does that happen?)
Oh well, thanks for the advice none the less.

If you are interested in a commercial server, Xi Graphics support the ATI
RagePro and the Intel i740 in all modes and resolutions fully hardware
accelerated, e.g. upto 1900x1440x 24bpp packed for 16.7 million colors. We are
also doing OpenGL 3D hardware acceleration with the Intel i740. Please contact
us at www.xig.com or 1.800.946.7433 x205.
