Subject: Soliciting suggestions for hardware environment.

I am interested in installing a small machine to provide more
flexibility to my network. My goal is to migrate services from
primary systems which require 24x7 connectivity and consolidate
them on a single server. This would enable me greater flexibility
in how and what I deploy on my other hosts. It's duty will be
primarily net connectivity/firewall/communications server.

Here are the software requirements
        sendmail
        wu-ftpd
        httpd
        innd
either IP-Masquerading or NAT (true NAT preferred)
        ppp and or cslip

small and low volume relational DB (mysql, oracle, or sybase)
        Secure IP (optional)

My hardware requirements are flexible. In order of importance they are:
        SCSI
        2 fast serial ports
        1-2 10/100 baseT network interfaces
        Low power consumption
        Quiet
        Small
        Inexpensive

I do not plan in using this for direct display of any graphics, so
it will rarely be connected to a monitor or keyboard. It should
not require either to boot. Once configured I can accept only
minimal, scheduled downtime.

Later SMP would be nice but would depend on cost.

My high end budget is $1K for the base system including:
        Motherboard
        Floppy
        SCSI
        Networking
        Ram
        Video
        CPU(s)

I have not purchased any PC components in several years and have
never used Linux. I have used Unix boxen exclusively since the
early 80s, so Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD are no problem.

I am also curious which CD based distribution is likely to give me
the best results (measured by the metrics of; time to implement,
robustness, and elegance).

Anyone got any ideas?

N.B. Willing to accept bids as well, especially from Boston area
vendors or gurus.

Remapping the keyboard is perfectly viable in Linux, but what if you have
a PC on which you need to boot lots of operating systems, and don't have the
time or inclination to learn how to remap the keyboard in each and every one?
(Or you want to leave these systems in their vanilla configuration for some
reason.)

There actually are keyboards on the market that still have the keys in the
right place for those of us (like EMACS users) who still use the Ctrl and Esc
keys a lot. Here's one:

  http://www.pfuca.com/products/hhkb/

It also has a Meta key (it says "Alt" but it works like Meta). The placement
of backslash, tilde, and Delete are a bit unfamiliar to PC keyboard users,
but other than that, the layout is great. Also, it's not quite as long as
a canoe paddle, so saves you some desktop.

P.S. It does not even *have* a Caps Lock key.

Hi Keith,

I've got an HP SCSI tape drive in my RedHat 5.2 box (don't know the model
number, it's an older 4mm dat drive) that works quite well. I just
connected it to the scsi chain and made sure that the devices were created
in /dev and all went well. your kernel must have SCSI support.

Windows Printer like HP 720c does not support Postscript format.
I have Deskjet 340 and use laserjet as its driver in Linux RedHat 5.2. It
can print StarOffice document. Use printtools to configure the driver.

Red Hat LINUX 5.2 -- I have a 3Com 3c905B-TX on a 100Mb LAN. The card
seems to start ok as I can ping my IP address, and I see no errors
during bootup. I verified all my IP settings with network support. I
cannot ping anything else on my subnet (including gateway) nor outside
the subnet. Is the card supposed to autosense the speed of the
network? Is there a configuration setting for setting the speed to 100
that I missed? Thanks in advance.

Go to /usr/src/linux
and run make config
and see if the third option "Limit memory to 16 meg" is set to Y
It should be 'N'.

Is there is simple test one can apply to a Linux machine that
comprehensively tests the memory?

I have a number of cluster machines which I suspect have faulty SIMMs. I am
familiar with the "Compile the Kernel"/"caught signal 11 error"test but due
to the diskless nature of the cluster machines, this test is impractical.

The BIOS test simply doesn't push the memory enough.

I would appreciate any advice/pointers to software etc.

Many thanks in advance!

The kernel is compiled with SMP=1

Everything seemed to work fine ...

But when i've got a heavy load on eth0, the server crashes with the

When working with a single processor kernel (SMP=1 commented), the

Hi:
I just got a Tekram DC390F SCSI card with UMAX Astra 610S scanner
which I heard that is supported by sane drivers. I have no trouble in
compiling Tekram DC390F SCSI card kernel driver but when I attach a
DB25-to-MDB68 SCSI cable between scanner and SCSI's external socket, the
troubles comes:

In booting:
...................
ncr53c8xx: at PCI bus 0, device 11, function 0

.!
ncr53c875-0: detaching...
scsi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detected total.
...................

The error message seems to suggest a hardware connection problem.
I checked that the termination is done at the other SCSI connecter of the
scanner and the cable itself is newly purchased in local computer store.
The SCSI card has only this scanner connected. So, I would like to ask
suggestion before I went out to try another cable.

One question though, is it OK to use DB25-MDB68 conversion cable
or would it be better to use something like DB25-DB50 conversion cable,
which the Tekram DC390F happens to have one internal 50 pin connector?

        Thanks for your time.

I don't know if you have tried this, but you could buy an internal-
to-external 50 pin SCSI converter. This is basically a cable that
plugs into the internal port on a card and goes to the rear of the
case. Probably about US$20at comp-usa. Much less from mail order.
Adaptec web site would have them too. That way you can take channel
to the external devices and leave channel 1 for the hard drive.
