Much deleted, see the original post.

I have a Micron TransPort Trek. When I boot my machine I see the same thing.
Of course my D-Link DE-650 Ethernet card (suppported by the way) causes
a low beep - high beep when inserted. The configuration files are very similar
to those used on Caldera 1.2 which worked with the same machine - card
combination?!

The real trouble began early in the boot process. The OS is RH 5.2

Any ideas.

Hi,

This posting is primarily to the newsgroup, but I'm cc'ing it to Jeremy
because it looks as if he has identical hardware.

I've recently tried to install RHL 5.1 on a pristine system (no OS an the
HD); the system boots from the CD beautifully and gives me the install
prompt, but on attempting to load the kernel, gives me a "Cannot load a
ramdisk with an old kernel image" message and returns to the prompt.
Curiously, booting from the boot floppy starts the loading process, but in
the middle of loading vmlinuz, the system reboots and then starts behaving
oddly (screen goes blank when it should begin checking the drives for the
boot sequence, etc.).

I haven't yet tried disabling the cache (please, PLEASE don't make me
disable the cache), and I'm hoping I won't have to swap out any of the
hardware. I got the system in parts from Atipa, who purportedly build Linux
systems... I would assume that the parts they carry are all Linux-ready.
I've seen that there are some problems with the AMD, although several people
are running AMD systems with no problem. Although I'd like to support the
smaller companies, I'd rather swap out the CPU for an Intel than permanently
disable the cache.

I can find no reference to the error message that the boot loader is giving
me. Can someone help me narrow down the possible cause of this sort of
error? CPU? Memory? Cache? BIOS?

The relevant parts of the system are:

   * FIC PA-2013 ATX Super Socket 7 motherboard, 1MB cache, 100MHz bus
   * AMD K6-2 300 (3D MMX)
   * 128MB SDRAM @ PC100MHz and 8ns latency (no memory errors, according to
     the BIOS)

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Dear Leslie,

I'm confused after I check SANE scanner support. Yes, it supports Agfa
and
is Vuego 310S compatible.

I found out that Agfa also sells product with name Vuego 310.
The strange thing is, Acer also sells scanner which is called AcerScan
310(P/S/U) and the label on top of the scanner says Vuego, so does the
box.
Is the Agfa scanner OEM or is the AcerScan OEM? Or are they totally
different product which accidentaly use the same brand name, Vuego?

Is there anything I can do to use my AcerScan 310P (Parallel port) in my
Linux? I'm prepared to do driver programming myself. Otherwise, I have
to
go back to windoze just to use the scanner, which I do not hope to.

I started to use Linux almost two months ago and I really like it,
despite
all the troubles with the driver (graphics card, sound card, printer).

Great jobs to all who contribute to Linux. Maybe I can also contribute
in
writing the driver for this AcerScan 310. The problem is, I do not know
where to start. Any hint?

TIA
Surya

I use this scanner with a PCI SCSI3 card. It works well enough

SCSI2->MacSCSI connectors can be found in places like BestBuy.

You will need to disable the PnP settings of the card to have it run under
linux.
If you dont have the setup disk with the card visit the 3com site there you
will find the disk set and you'll be able to disable PnP. Any other problems

Subject: Save me from Win95: need AMD PCnet, Matrox MGA drivers help
Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 19:14:28 -0700

I have an HP Vectra Xu 5/133c computer which is currently running
Windows 95. I am completely frustrated with windows and want to
install Redhat Linux 5.2. One week ago, I attempted to install Redhat
Linux 5.2 on this machine and had problems when transferring files
from the CD_ROM to the hard-drive. It is not feasible for me to buy a
new computer. Therefore, I would like to know if it is worth
attempting to install Linux on this machine.

I allowed the installation program to choose its own SCSI controller
driver and it chose the driver am53c974. After selecting which
programs to install, the installation program began copying files from
the Toshiba CD-ROM XM-53017A to the Quantum Fireball (1G) hard-drive.
During this process the following error messages were displayed:

    Error AM53c974_Abort called
    AM53C974 register dump:
[I didn't copy down the register dump data]
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 22882) timed out- reseting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
    AM53c974_reset called
    AM53c974 register dump:
[I didn't copy down the register dump data]

The machine apparently froze at this point, and when I attempted to
swap screens (ALT-#) in the RedHat install, the following message
appeared:

kernel panic scsi_free: trying to free unused memory

At this point, the computer was completely frozen. I opened the box
and have this information listed on the chip in the motherboard which
appears to be the SCSI (as well as ethernet) controller:

    PCnet(TM)- SCSI
    AM79c974kc
    9520EPA A4
    (c)1993 AMD

A replacement SCSI card does not seem to be an option due to the
layout of the components inside the case (a hacksaw would be
necessary).

I was also unable to find the ethernet "card" (Win95 indicated that
its an "AMD Family Ethernet PCI") in the list of supported hardware on
the Redhat web site. In looking at the kernal source on my
officemate's machine, I have found a driver, lance.c (the AMD Lance
chip _is_ supported by RH) which apparently recognizes the AM79c974,
but it is not clear to me whether it can actually _handle_ that chip.
Obviously, I have no way of knowing if it will work because I cannot
get past the down-load portion of the installation.

As if things could not get any worse, the video card (Win95 indicated
that its an "Matrox MGA Ultima/ Impression") is also not listed as
supported hardware.

I am an aerospace engineering graduate student at the University of
Colorado with a good deal of computer experience, but I do not have
the ability to write my own drivers. If anyone has information on the
SCSI driver, Ethernet card, or video card, I would appreciate any
response. Again, I would like to know if it worth any more of my time
to try to get this to work. Thanks.

I'm having trouble with RH 5.2 and my mouse. It seems to be acting just like the
other mice. I have a Logitech FirstMouse+ . It has a PS/2 connector with a
serial
adapter. My mouse either does nor mose or it jumps across the screen. My mouse
worked just fine when I was using Caldera Open Linux. I thought I'd upgrade to
RH 5.2, now it won't work. I might try to get a straight serial mouse and see
how
that works.

Zeph,

I installed RedHat 5.2 on a ThinkPad 1450 (which uses the same display=20
chip as the 1411). Let the RedHat install probe for the card and=20
accept the defaults.=20

The SVGA X window server that ships with RH 5.2 works great. The Track=20
Point is a PS/2 generic 3 button mouse.

Other notes:

Now if I can only get the PCMCIA to work with my 3Com network card.

I do not yet have the sound working yet.

I don't have hibernate mode working yet.

The V.90 windoze modem will not work.

In summary, X windows works well, might have to do some work to get=20
PCMCIA and sound going. Buy a PCMCIA modem to use in place of the=20
built-in one.

Good luck,

Thomas

he defaults.=20

The SVGA X window server that ships with RH 5.2 works great. The Track P=
oint is a PS/2 generic 3 button mouse.

Other notes:

Now if I can only get the PCMCIA to work with my 3Com network card.

I do not yet have the sound working yet.

I don't have hibernate mode working yet.

The V.90 windoze modem will not work.

In summary, X windows works well, might have to do some work to get PCMC=
IA and sound going. Buy a PCMCIA modem to use in place of the built-in o=
ne.

Good luck,

Thomas

  I have a Cyrix 686MX PR233 on a EFA Viking 1 P5V580-AT-C board. I've tried
playin' with the system clock, but I can only do 133.4x bogomips. Is this a
Cyrix pr EFA booboo? Can I fix this, or should I just forget it my performance
is fine? Hmmm.... Maybe it doesn't matter... : (. (wanna do 200 at least)

Subject: onboard DSP winmodem?
Date: Tue, 19 Jan 1999 18:20:36 -0000

Hi, I am one of those unfortunates caught up in the winmodem problem.
My PC was advertised as having a 56K voice/fax/modem On
inspection the device turned out to call it's self an LT winmodem... I
assumed
that this meant it was a host signal processing device and therefore
unlikely
ever to be supported by the LINUX crowd. So I called the guys at MESH who
had sold me my pc to ask for an exchange (no mention of winmodems in the
product description, buyer beware!).

I was interested to hear that the model I have was a:

Multiwave: Comwave 56 PCI
(Lucent Technologies chipset)
DSP (as opposed to HSP)

I was assured that all the signal procesing was done onboard, that they had
stopped shipping HSP devices.

Has anyone any experience of getting this hardware to work with linux?
Or does the winmodem label mean that the spec is kept a dark secret?

Thanks for any help,
Simon.

Greetings,

I am planning to install Linux on a friend's computer. He wants to
use a Matrox Mystique S220 PCI. I visited XFree's website and noticed
that the Matrox Mystique was supported, but it made no mention of
"S220". Apparently, there is another Matrox Mystique model, a "G200".
Will we experience any problems configuring X-Windows? Thanks.
