The PCMCIA network card in my laptop died a few days ago, and I can't
get it to connect to the outside world (well, maybe I'll set up PLIP,
but I'd really hate having to do that).
OK, here are the boot messages: background info below. Up to the
"eth0" line it's identical to a successful boot from (say) a week ago.

The machine is an MBC "Prostar" with P233/64Mb/3Gb and 15" screen -
AFAICT manufactured in the far east and also sold as an identical box
by other vendors such as AJP. The network card is a DLINK DE-660,
and has worked fine since new last May. It is (or was) recognized
as NE2000 compatible.
On monday morning, I plugged the card in as usual, and accessed the
network. Later, without having connected, disconnected, or any such thing
it was dead. I suspect a hardware error either in the PC or in the card,
but I've no way of testing for this.
I have quite a lot of log messages from the time it went down: I'm hoping
that by posting it here I can get some help with a diagnosis. Note that
I've tried a lot of software solutions in the meantime, including a kernel
upgrade (transported 2.0.36 on floppies)!
(AAARGH - I've trashed /var/[adm|log]: it's not on my root-partition backup,
and I physically can't make a whole-filesystem backup without the
network card).

Does anyone know if this is correct, because I've just bought a Dell
PowerEdge with Adaptec AIC-7890s and AIC-7860 (CD-ROM card) with a view to
installing Linux (and unfortunately NT!) and Oracle - I'll be a bit gutted
if Linux can't install on it.
Both RedHat 5.2 and Slackware 3.6 completely hang the machine when trying to
detect it; I can't even turn the machine off using the power button!
I've checked on the Adaptec web site and they don't have any info on Linux -
only SCO I think.

I have the same setup and it works fine. I have shut off the power saver stuff
though.
It gave me problems in both Win & OS/2 . I shut it off before I installed Linux
and
don't know if it would have affected it.

I recently got hold of a couple of VXT 2000/VXT 2000+ terminals and
I'm interested in hanging them off my Linux box. I know that when they
were connected to the Digital Unix server, special drivers/fonts had
to be loaded on the server.... I know the same files probably won't
work on Linux (I don't have them anyway). But I'm curious if any else
may have run across the same situation, and how you may have solved
it. And by the way, Digital no longer supports the terminals on their
servers, so I know they won't support it on Linux. I'd appreciate any
info/advice sent this way. Cheers,

This newbie found the following command ( plagarized by me from a
newsgroup !) to be very helpful with Xwindows.
startx > /tmp/x.out 2>&1
Use it to start Xwindows and it will log ALL of the Xwindows startup
in the file /tmp/x.out. Then use your favorite editor to look at
the startup messages.... you'll learn a lot about how Xwindows works
and the effect of different parameters inyour configuration file.

How did you try to mount it? What was the complaint? If the kernel
detects the drive when you boot chances are the problem is in whatever
command line you're using to mount it.

I'm glad, but I should point out that the answer to my question is
"no" -- you are using an ISA modem, not a PCI modem. The "Winmodem"
designation here is apparantly some sort of misguided marketing thing,
especially since "Winmodem" is a 3com trademark. Exact brand names
and model numbers would help here.

Well there is a simple trick that a reseller does I know of...and I have
yet to see
a failure because of it...though I wouldn't recommend this for
overclocked CPUs
Simply take the red wire (normally anyway) from the 12v line to the 5v
line
This reduces the fan speed ...to what I notice... about 60% of orig...
but from tests I've done ..the CPU seems to handle it quite well
being only slightly warm to touch...which is more than acceptable
but more important...reduces the fan noise considerably
.
it also extends the life of those crappy cheap fans....
which BTW I believe should have more lube from the start

My conspiracy theory was that GTE was in collusion with BillG. I called
again yesterday and got a different sales rep. She said that win95 works
but win98 doesn't do dhcp competently. Then she said what the other
guy should have, that you're on your own with win98(etc. linux etc.),
instead of saying it won't work and get out of town.

Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 07:51:10 -0000
Hi:
I am trying to build a diskless workstation using Linux. I can't use local
HD/FD so I need to know if there is a card that will take the place of a HD
and its boot sector that will allow me to put in all the required bootp
software in FLASH Rom/ or even the whole OS.
I have heard that some network cards have a socket for a ROM that is used
for this sort of thing, but I understood that that was for Novell only. If
that is not correct, can anyone tell me whether there is a source for a
Linux compatible chip or source for this? I do not know much about the NIC
hardware, so if I am saying something stupid I apologize.
Thanks in advance.

Do yourself a real favor and check around your local office supply stores
and such before buying a modem via the WWW. You'll find out that the prices
aren't all that different once you add in the WWW site's S&H fees, and
you'll won't run into problems with returning the modem if you buy it local.

I think lilo itself needs to be told the disk geometry.
Read the lilo.conf and lilo man pages. Also, the LargeDisk mini-HOWTO may
help (but don't let it confuse you).
