The first winmodems were ISA. Does this answer your question?

There was recently (a couple of days ago, but I haven't checked since) a
Mylex/Buslogic BT-930 on pricewatch, for $30 (www.pricewatch.com). Go to
I/O controller cards/PCI, and there it should be. It's a decent scsi-2.
You cannot ask for more at this price :).

i just started getting this error while trying to install my 3c509 module
...
init_module: device or resource busy
this had been working for years, and now doesn't ... the most significant
change i made today was going into windows for the first time in a looong
time ... i think things still worked after that though, which is puzzling
...
i've tried putting the card into pnp mode and using isapnptools, which
seemed to configure it correctly, and also disabling pnp and setting the
card with the 3com install program -- no luck ... still works for windows
though ... there are no irq or ioport conflicts that i can see, and i
can't think of any reason why it would be thought that the 'device or
resource' is busy ...
any help?

Subject: Ftape Problem!!
Hi!!
I've just upgraded to kernel 2.2.1 and correspondingly downloaded the
latest ftape snapshot and installed everything.
Problem is that everytime I issue the command "ftmt -f /dev/qft0 status"
I get a "device not configured" error
I'm using a ditto 2GB parallel drive.
What do I do (and in general how would I go about configuring devices
since I get the same error for /dev/sequencer when trying to play midi
files with playmidi )
Thanks

Subject: ISA video card recommendation

new to linux, running redhat 5.2 with 2.0.36 kernel
I set up redhat on an old i486 system with an ISA motherboard, I have a
video card with a 1MB cirrus logic cl-gd5420 chip on it, however I can only
get 640 x 480 with 16 colors, when I probe the card it only returns this one
option. Someone told me that there may be a linear addressing issue
(whatever that means) that prevents this card from getting higher
resolutions/depth in linux. If anyone knows how I might set this up for 800
x 600 with 16bit color please let me know.
I also have an ATI mach 64 GX ISA card but as luck would have it, from what
I've read this card has system addressing issues for systems with more than
12MB memory (I have 20 in this system) and I get the same 640 x 480 x 16
colors
Can anyone suggest an ISA video card that supports 800 x 600 x 16bit?

The Linux support for the chip-set of your SCSI card is fairly recent; Red
Hat apparently uses a modified or slightly newer kernel than the others. As
I already pointed out to you in <79uhtp$531$[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
(http://www.dejanews.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=443188852), modified Debian
boot-disks that support your SCSI card are available from
http://x12.dejanews.com/jump/http://www.debian.org/~adric/aic7xxx/ .

FIPS 20 is also distributed in Debian's tools directory.

In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Andy Glew <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:
First, as someone else has commented, the ECC codes I am familiar
with are not special - an error anywhere, in the data or code, is
detectable. The ECC part is not special.
<...>
So, again, my question is this:
What fraction of disk surface errors span 1 block,
2 blocks, 3 blocks ... an entire track?
- i.e. what degree of parity group interleaving
would be required for an acceptable level
of protection?
Compare this to
What fraction of errors are correctable by block ECC?
<...>
Finally, the term "Same disk RAID" is a poor one. Better to call it
"same disk block parity groups".
If protection of data is the goal (and not performance), then why not
just ECC the entire track? Read performance shouldn't be greatly
affected (drives generally read the entire track into a buffer
anyhow). Write performance would obviously require a write-after-read
that isn't currently required - but that would also be the case with
parity groups.
The advantage would be that a "track" is a very natural unit for a
drive to work with. On write, the controller could read the existing
track, merge the new changes, and write the new track with no
rotational delay. Given that many bits to work with, the ECC should
be able to handle substantial centered drop-outs (if a scratch takes
out 1000 bits on each side of a specific point, for instance). You'd
also maximize the available bits-per-track, because you wouldn't
require block markers or gaps between blocks (there would be a gap
per-track, and presumably one could use an encoding which allowed you
to start reading a track from any point).
Inter-track problems would clearly be harder to handle, if only
because the seeking involved would itself decrease reliability. In
that case having multiple drives is clearly a win,

Matijn,
one common thing in Linux is its ability to surprise users coming from
DOS/Windows environments. Executable programs are one interesting point!
In order to execute a program under Linux it is necessary either to pass its
full path, or include the directory in the PATH environment variable. Refer to
your manual for setting the path, I currently don't remember the entries for
bash. Another way of doing this is
./programname <return>
(I don't know if bash supports it though, csh and tcsh do).
This tells that a program wants to be executed in the current (.) directory... a
little bit complicated.
To avoid having sixtyfour-thousand directories in the PATH variable, I created a
directory called "shortcuts" and every executable file goes in there. Adding
"shortcuts" to the PATH variable is a quite simple task.
Hope this will help solve your problems. If not, I'm available.

Hi there!
I've got a weird problem trying to boot SMP kernel on Intel SC450NX box.
The most amazing thing is that
- 2.2.1 kernel w/o SMP boots quite fine
- 2.2.1 kernel w/SMP boots from floppy but
- booting SMP kernel from HD via LILO produces the following result:
| LILO: smp
| Loading smp........
| Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
I would not be confused if SMP kernel would not work at all
but I don't see any reasons why it doesn't boot _only_ from HD.
LILO ver.21
Hardware: 2x Xeon 400Mhz 1Mb cache, embedded Symbios 53C810a SCSI-2

I am using RedHat 5.2 and I have a 56k ISA PnP modem. I have
disabled PnP in the computer's bios. I can talk to the modem and even
get it to dial through minicom, but the response from the modem takes
FOREVER. It takes about a minute and a half for the studid thing to
respond to AT commands.
The word "winmodem" does not apear anywhere on the box for the
modem, and it is my understanding that winmodems simply do not respond
at all under Linux.
I tried an older NON-PnP modem and it worked fine, so I'm guessing
that it does have something to do with PnP.
I have checked the IRQs and nothing else is set for IRQ 3.
Any Ideas? (Besides buying a new modem.)

think it's probably something to do with modem initialisation strings. Can

When I installed RedHat 5.2, I said 'yes' when asked if I had any SCSI. Then
I let it autoprobe, and my ppa was detected.
Now, if I want sda4 to be mounted at boot, I leave a Zipdisk in the drive.
