: No, it is a simple instruction. Not a reaset per se' but a processor
: "hyperspace" instruction that reset the CPU state and read a block of
: memory at (I think) 40H and continued in real mode (The ip was also
: read). The purpose was testing the protected mode portion of the
: processor during device testing. The processor test program needed to
: get back into real mode from protected mode.
Where did you find this information? It sounds like someone is confusing
the fast reset via I/O added to the 286 at some point and what BIOS does
when started. BIOS checks a particular BIOS variable to determine if it is
a cold or warm boot. By setting up this BIOS variable and resetting the
CPU (keyboard controller, fast reset, multiple faults - all preventable by
a protected mode OS that chooses to do so) a program can control where
control goes when the CPU starts. Since memory (programs and data) is
unchanged by the CPU reset this works quite nicely.
: The problem was this screwed up the bios block. OS/2 had to save the
: bios block, setup the future register values at 40H, execute the
: instruction and copy the bios block back.
:
: Seriously it does exist, I bet it still exists in the '386 and higher
: because they run OS/2 1.x.
Restarting BIOS would change various BIOS variables so saving some of
these would make sense. I know the reset technique has been used quite a
bit, I'm only questioning the notion that there is an undocumented reset
instruction in the x86. The various methods of resetting the CPU I'm aware
of involve I/O instruction or descriptor table instructions. My main point
being that a protected mode OS can prevent a user program from causing a
reset.
If you have any URLs about this 'reset instruction' I'll be happy to check
them out.

I'm still looking these up as I go, but I have a short list.
Acetone (boils about 56C and flammable, but common)
Propionaldehyde (49C, again, flammable)
1,3 difluoropropane (41.6 C)
My favorite on the list is the last because it's going to be
the most inert and have the lowest boiling point.
The nice thing about this is that boiling requires more heat
than raising the temperature of a liquid, generally speaking.
An additional bonus is that the bubbles of vapor will rise to
the top of the liquid due to gravity, eliminating the need
for a pump.

Just raise the voltage to at least 2.3V. If that doesn't work try 2.4V.
My K6-2/350 works PERFECTLY at 400 but, like yours, it won't even boot if I
run it at only the standard 2.2V.

The only way I could trick Red Hat into making a boot disk on the
LS-120 was to do this:
cd /dev
mv fd0 fd0-
ln -s hdb fd0
Then "mkbootdisk 2.0.36-3" will make a boot disk (substitute whatever
kernel version you're running for the 2.0.36-3 in the above). All other
stuff that expects to access the floppy will also see the floppy where
it expects it to be.
I haven't had a chance to explore "mkbootdisk" to see if there is a more
elegant way of doing it.
Note that your system will boot off of that boot disk only if your BIOS
supports booting off of removable drives. I know that all ASUS Pentium II
motherboards can have their BIOS re-flashed to support booting off of
removable drives, but many older boards have never been updated to do so.

You can try searching the newsgroups through http://www.dejanews.com
about this but I don't think you will be succesful. I think Linux
requires at a minimum a 386 processor.
I have heard that some people are working on a possible solution
to get it to work on a 286. Right off hand, I can't think what
it is called.
Another option is to use a terminal program on the 8088/286 and
login in to a Linux system if you have one.
I have also seen people mention "minix" but I don't know anything
about it or what its requirements are.

No GNUs is bad GNUs folks.
Have Redhat (5.1), Cannot Back-Up. So, in the wonderful world of Redhat Linux
must I become a Ph.D. programmer so that I can write a driver-program so that I
can use a Hewlett-Packard T1000e tape drive? Surely _someone_ out there uses
this tape drive on his/her Redhat/Linux system. Otherwise, I could use a goof
recommendation for a tape-drive which _is_ readily compatible/usable with
Linux/Redhat.
