Subject: NIC card not initializing
Date: Tue, 16 Mar 1999 04:06:23 GMT
Greetings all,
I'm trying to connect my Linux Box to a TCP/IP network. I have a 486DX4 100
with 32MB RAM, DTC 2278E controller, ATI Mach32, and an ISA SMC Elite
Ultra Network card (83C790QF Chipset). I tried using the Kernel
configuration utility under Xwindows. I chose the SMC Ultra module, and
configured the card properly. I then used the Network configuration utility
to setup the ip addresses, net mask, etc. The card did not initialize during
lilo boot. I also tried "ifconfig -a", with no output. I then swapped the
card with a new 3COM Etherlink III card and ran the configuration utilities
again. The same thing happens. I then typed "cat /some directory/proc" to
check for address conflicts, there was none. I also can't find eth0 in the
/dev directory. The HOWTO documents says to recompile the kernel to use the
ethernet modules. The documents says to untar the kernel source file in
"/usr/src" and run make config or make menuconfig. I don't see any kernel tar
files and "make config" yielded an error. How can I recompile the kernel
to use the ethernet module? Any help would beappreciated?
Thank You,
James
P.S. I also inserted, "append eth0=10, 0x300" in lilo.conf. Nothing happens

I have a same MS 2-button PS2 mouse like yours. While I was installing the
RH5.2, I use the wrong protocol. After installing, I have to run
mouseconfig to select the right protocol--Generic Mouse (PS2) for it. If
you run stratx immediately, the mouse wouldn't work. I have to re-run
XConfigurator to setup the X-windows again. Then the mouse would work. You
may want to try this.

Hi,
Wonder if any of u can help me out with a little problem i'm
having with my Teles ISDN card & Linux...
I can't seem to get the kernel to recognize the interrupt
i've set for the card... here's the details..
I'm using kernel 2.0.36 and a Teles 16.3c ISA PnP card...
Here's the relevant section of my /usr/src/linux/.config :-
=========================================
CONFIG_MODULES=y
CONFIG_ISDN=m
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP_VJ=y
CONFIG_ISDN_MPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_LOOP=m
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_HISAX=m
CONFIG_HISAX_EURO=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_0=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_3=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELES3C=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELESPCI=y
CONFIG_HISAX_S0BOX=y
=========================================
I've compiled the ISDN subsystem as a module and also the HiSax drivers
for Teles 16xx all as modules.
Booted up with the new kernel
Here's my /etc/isapnp.conf file :-
=========================================
(READPORT 0x0203)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING
(CONFIGURE TAG2620/209717183 (LD 0
(IO 0 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0300))
(INT 0 (IRQ 10 (MODE +E)))
(NAME "TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c Plug&Play}")
(ACT Y)
))
(WAITFORKEY)
=========================================
Did an "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" and got the following :-
========================================= lspci not found, so PCI resource
conflict not checked Board 1 has Identity bd 0c 80 07 bf 20 26 27 50:
TAG2620 Serial No 209717183 [checksum bd] TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c
Plug&Play}: Port 0x300; IRQ10 --- Enabled OK
=========================================
OK.. no problem so far... then i did the modprobe hisax like this and
got the results as follows:-
=========================================
# modprobe hisax type=14 protocol=2 irq=10 io=0x300
ISDN subsystem Rev: 1.44.2.9/1.41.2.11/1.48.2.27/none/none loaded
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 1
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 2
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 3
HiSax: Card Teles 16.3c not installed !
Initialization of hisax failed
ISDN-subsystem unloaded
=========================================
Something's not right here... can't pinpoint exactly where it is... tried
putting the card to another PC but got the same results... MAYBE it could
be the card being faulty OR something else... hope u can help out here..
Thanx ;) ;)

Hi all.
I run RedHat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36) on my Thinkpad 760XL with Turbo
Tokenring PC Card and PCMCIA modem.
My WM is KDE and all the things are running well. Now, trying to install
Wine to run Lotus Notes from Linux.
The only problem occur is DHCP but I think it most on kernel level,
token ring, and dhcp level.
That's my share to you.

I am sure that the drive is IDE. Up until this 486, I have never used a CD which didn't
attach to the IDE controller. Also the sound card connector is marked IDE. And as I
said, this drive was working with this sound card under windows 95. ( I think the drive
was originally attached to an old Pentium I had)

When I need to move crap between drives I find the tar command to be quite
usefull:
Assuming you have your new drive mounted as /mnt/newdrive, and also assuming
you have this on one large partition (I usually would seperate out /home and
/usr, but it's up to you):
Go through every directory in / excluding /proc and /mnt and do the following:
[root@hostname /]# tar -c dirname/ | tar -xC /mnt/newdrive/
That should tar up the whole directory and pipe it out to another tar that will
be untarring what is coming through the pipe after changing the current
directory to /mnt/newdrive so that it all shows up in the right directory.
Make sure you don't do it for the /mnt directory (duh.. recursion). and just
mkdir /mnt/newdrive/proc but don't put anything in it.
This should work for copying the crap in /dev also (since a distro usually has
a .tar.gz of the proper /dev dir anyway).
You will also need to properly install lilo on the machine (I strongly
recommend creating a bootdisk with the proper kernel and initrd on it while you
still have your old hd up and running, then reboot with the disk giving it the
root=/dev/sdxN. If all goes well, reconfigure lilo, run it, and you should be
in business.
Dave.
P.S. YMMV, but the tar thing is a trick I like much better than using cp.

At /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients I add a case for Gnome to start gnome-session.
At /root, edit file ".wm_style" and change it from FVWM95 to Gnome. then
save it and run startx. That's it.

Subject: Linux & PCI Modems
Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 19:44:04 GMT
Hi,
I'd like some info about the current situation with PCI modems
Here's what I understand:
a) WinModems DON't work
- Obvious, and would never expect them to work
b) Modems needing an enumerator can be made to work by loading them in DOS to write
this bit of software to the
modem, and then booting into linux will work
- Pain in the backside to do this if you don't keep your computer permanently
on
c) Modems using shared memory, detected by linux as using shared memory in /proc/pci
(configured by BIOS or
whatever, normally) could be made to work with linux (relatively) easily if there are
any specs for using shared memory
for modems
- I don't know if there are any such specs (also is this similar to b) ? )
d) modems with a UART on-board
- these work with linux
Could someone tell me, or point me to modems/chipsets which fall into category d), ie
those which work with linux?
Also, is there anything for type c) to work in linux?
Thanks,
Amir Shamsuddin

In the process of configuring my sound card, I had to run pnpdump >
/etc/isapnp.conf and modify it for the correct settings for my sound cound. I
also had a listing for my 3c509 Ethernet(which is ISA), for which there was no
"Multiple choice", only one of each type of argument in isapnp.conf.
This is where the "But" comes in. But...
When i rebooted, I got an error message about the LD settings. dmesg didn't
catch the error message, but the gist of it was it said it couldn't verify ld4
but that it may not be aproblem, try running (verifyld n), the line# of the
error in /etc/isapnp.conf was in the 3c509 section.
Then later in the bootup, i get the message:
IPX Portions Copyright (c) 1995 Caldera, Inc.
Appletalk 0.17 for Linux NET3.035
eth0: 3c509 at 0x300 tag 1, 10baseT port, address 00 a0 24 bf f5 ec, IRQ 10.

Any ideas? I"m thinking maybe I don't need the section in isapnp.conf, since
its being picked up somewhere else.

Has anyone tried to get X windows to run on a Toshiba Satellite 2535 CDS
laptop? The chipset it uses is Chips & Technologies 6900. I am using
Red Hat 5.2 and I have tried some of the drivers for other C & T
chipsets and I havn't been able to make one work. Any ideas?
Also, with this laptop when it is in the regular text mode the display
doesn't fill the screen. It fills it ithe horizontal direction but not
vertical. It looks like one of those videos in the wide screen formats.
Is there a way to fix this?
Thanks for any help,

Why do Linux people always seem to forget that 99.9% of the people who
use a computer are not experts. Try to explain to my mom that you should
press some keys to change resolution (if she knows what that is), or
that she should 'just rebuild the kernel' to include some feature.

The E+ is a PCL printer, and should function fine with a generic PCL printer
description, like the HP laserjet //. I think with any *NIX derivation,
it's better to go with an inexpensive PostScript printer though.
You may want to look at the new Lexmark Optra E310, which has full PS Level
2 emulation, 8ppm, USB and parallel ports as standard. - MSRP is $400.
Street price should be slightly lower. This printer replaces the Ep, which
was essentially the E+ with a special PostScript 2 emulation SIMM inside. I
know a kid at school that has one of these running under Linux too. You
might still be able to find the Ep at a good price online.
My Optra RT+ worked perfectly under Caldera, and Irix 5.3 - in the
Postscript emulation mode.
