Actually, 2.0.x had drivers for this card - it's a TI ThunderLan, use
the TLAN driver.

I'm having resolution problems with SiS 5598 on RH5.2. Some
of the stuff that 'startx' spews out to STDERR (before actually
running X at 320x200) says:
SVGA: Mode "800x600" needs hsync freq of 35.16kHz. Deleted.(--)
In fact *all* modes get "Deleted" like this, which is
presumably why it then goes on to say:
SVGA: Using builtin driver modes(--)
SVGA: Builtin Mode: 320x200(--)
SVGA: Virtual resolution set to 320x204(--)
SVGA: SpeedUp code selection modified because virtualX != 1024
Even if I frig XF86Config to have the correct hsync and
vsync values (i.e. the ones it says it needs) and so get rid
of those "Deleted" messages, still I get only low
resolution.
Is it significant that I also get an ominous "Unknown chipset"
message (in that same STDERR):
SVGA: PCI: SiS Unknown chipset (0x0200) rev 104, Memory @0xe1000000, 0xe1400000,
I/O @ 0xe000(--)
SVGA: chipset: generic(--)
SVGA: videoram: 64k(**)
SVGA: clocks: 25.18(**)
SVGA: Using 8 bpp, Depth 8, Color weight: 666(--)
I'm using 3.3.3.2 of XF86 and the monitor is by Daewoo and
isn't mentioned anywhere on the planet as far as I can see.

It looks like you are correct about having to upgrade the kernel to at least
version 2.0.35 as per this page:
.
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Large-Disk-7.html
But, this page also says that your disk should have looked like 8 gig or
something rather than nothing. So, even though OS/2 works,
check the master/slave jumper settings on the disk drives before
doing the kernel upgrade. hda and hdc are master usually and
hdb and hdd are slave; hda and hdb being on one cable and hdc
and hdd on another.
Regarding /usr:
if you get the disk drive detected one way or another, then you can
create a list of files and subdirectories to copy:
ls / >afilename
then edit "afilename" and remove /swap and /proc because
they do not need to be copied.
And then:
cat afilename | cpio -p /seconddisk
(where second disk is mounted on "/seconddisk" subdirectory).
And
mkdir /seconddisk/proc
This will copy everything over.
And then you must edit /etc/lilo.config
to change root = /dev/hda5
to root = /dev/hdb10
and run /sbin/lilo to install the change.
Also read more detail here:

Of course PCs can be used for the kinds of "serious work" where
occasional crashes and small amounts of data loss (<1 day's work) can
be tolerated. But such risks are inherent in the platform, and can't
be totally eliminated even by using a more robust OS such as Linux

in good working order).

I agree, I think he's actually getting a good deal... I'm paying $80 / month for 384k

The current going rate in my area (Portland, OR) would be more.

This is definitely a winmodem (HSP stands for Host Signal Processing)--
this modem is made by several manufacturers using the PCtel micromodem

There is no way to use this modem without the MS Windows software. If you

Subject: Re: Linux and 486
Date: 19 Mar 1999 07:46:03 GMT
I just installed RH5.2 on a 486DX2/66 this weekend so I can share some data.
- Machine has 32MB RAM, 128KB L2 cache and 3G hard disk (not original!)
- Full "install everything" took 800MB+ on the disk and 2-3 hours start to
finish (the big time users were high level format of the disk with verify,
and installing all the packages.)
- Turned off all the daemons that weren't needed, got to the point where
sitting at a shell window prompt in fvwm2 about 8-10MB of memory were in
use. So 16MB seems about minimum for running X and some applications.
- Ran full-blown KDE install with Netscape 4.07 on top of that and it works
fine, although Netscape took maybe 10sec to come up and is a bit sluggish.
- Ethernet (NE2000 card) and X (ISA ATI Mach32) performance are fine, for
example "ACM" running on my faster machine produces smooth screen updates.
- Tried decompressing a big MP3 file with "mpg123 -s bigfile.mp3 >/dev/null"
on both my Celeron 300A and on this thing. The Celeron is 18 times as fast
at rated clock speed! The 486 is not fast enough to play an MP3 in realtime
(there's no sound card in it anyway.)
Conclusion:
If you have a fast PC running Windows and install Linux on a slow one you won't
be impressed. But it works, 486DX2/66 with 32MB RAM is just fast enough for
most of the toys. Will you ever like it when you inevitably upgrade to a
modern CPU.

I'll mention that to Corel, Id Software, and the hundreds of other sites

I am using a Diamond Viper V550 AGP board which has the same nVidia
Riva TNT chip and have no problems. You will need to upgrade your
XFree86 to the latest version (3.3.3.1?) and use the SVGA server.

Thanks! That's news for me... when I was looking around I did find Mylex was
supported, but it could be a nasty surprise to discover it wouldn't work in a
K6.
Anyhow, if I decide to buy, just a PCI-RAID-controller then I'd be using it
in a dual PPro 200 MHz HP LH Netserver (Intel FX chipset), so I guess wrong
parts would not become a problem. However, I'm also looking at buying a
completely new Dell Poweredge 4300 with PERC-32 RAID controller. Does anyone
know how support is for this controller under Linux? As far as I could find
on the Dell website, they support Linux for their Poweredge 1300 and 2300,
but I haven't received a word back from Dell about the support for their
4300. Does anyone have experience running Linux on a system with this
RAID-controller???

Edit the XF86Config file and change the memory setting for
the card. It should be 1024 if you have the default 1MB card.
