For Browser and email, you could look into getting netscape, communicator
4.5 should give you email and web browsing, and isn't a far cry from IE4, if
that's what you were using.

If it's an external modem, then you have nothing to worry about as far as
compatibility is concerned. I have an AOpen FM56-ITU internal modem and it
works fine with Linux because it has jumpers on it so I can manually set
the I/O port and IRQ.

I have this exact card, and had the exact same experience, I downloaded
the updates for Xfree86 from Red Hat's site. It is explained in great
detail there. Now it works like a charm.

What is your "config_serial" set to in /usr/src/linux/.config It
should be Y
What does cat /proc/ioports say about the serial ports? They should be
listed.
Are there any error messages at boot time. You can view these with dmesg

I'm fairly sure 5.2 DOES support the SP97V, but for forgotten reasons,
I upgraded to the XFree86-3.3.3.1-1 & etc. RPMs, which I KNOW supports
it. (I'm using it now.) Use the XF86_SVGA X server.

Hi,
I've got two problems with my Laserjet 1100, Linux Mandrake 5.3,
ghostscript-4.03-1
using th Laserjet 4/5/6 driver

1. Printig more then one page via ghostscript takes a lot of time. Every
single page is treated as a singel printjob. This problem does not
happen using dvilj, but there are lots of .ps documents out there...

2. postscript graphics are only printed with 300x300 dpi. Using 600x600
results in pictures where the lines are displaced against each other.

Has anyone solved these problems ?

Date: 19 Mar 1999 08:02:38 GMT

I have a Toshiba Satellite 4000CDS laptop on which Linux works more or
less perfectly except for one problem--the sound chip (a Yamaha
OPL3-SA2) often stops working after I use APM to suspend the machine.
Sound applications do not produce sound; anything I pipe into
/dev/audio is silently ignored. The sound does usually come back if I
manually rmmod the opl3sa2 module and modprobe it again; however, this
is a pretty obnoxious process, and even this doesn't necessarily work.
Anyone have a solution?

The installed system is RedHat Linux 5.2. I get the problem with both
2.0.36 and 2.2.3 kernels (hand-compiled for APM support).

Kernel 2.2.3 has all kinds of support for Parallel devices, but as of yet, I
have been able to find a configuration that will run my old, discontinued,
Eagle Exabyte TR-3 Parallel port Travan 3 drive.

Does anyone know of a driver, or a combination of kernel options and drivers
that might actually get this beast running, and backing up my Linux boxes.
This is the last Windows-era piece of hardware that I have been unable to get
running under my now complete M$ free LAN.

Eventually I am just going to buy a completely Linux supported Travan drive
(any suggestions?), but I would at least like to give this a good shot.

Surely someone out there has one of these tape drives, and has gotten it
spinning?

Any help is appreciated.

We do that. On-site support, everything from tiny Netier network computers
(think Netwinder, except Intel-based and available NOW) to file-cabinet-sized
RAID servers with 5-channel RAID controllers and dual or quad Xeons.

Don't EMAIL me if you're interested, 'cause I'm in the tech department and

I believe VA Research (http://www.varesearch.com) will also do that.
I can't think of any other Linux hardware company that has national
support, sorry. (I also don't know whether our support or VA Research's goes
to Mexico or Canada, sorry).

different.

OK, you need a 'basic' intelligence to use a computer. You need a basic
intelligence to succeed, or survive, in this society. But the 'minimum
level' should be as low as possible. You should not exclude people from
participating in this world.

I partly agree with that. Many people have a stance of 'I don't know
diddly about computers, I don't understand nothing about them'. This
fear holds them back from trying.

In one of the market segments we sell one of our products we replace
manual labour with a computer. Those people haven't used a computer for
all their lives and suddenly are expected to sit all day behind a
station. Things we take for granted are complicated for them.

I am sure that the drive is IDE. Up until this 486, I have never used a CD which didn't
attach to the IDE controller. Also the sound card connector is marked IDE. And as I

It's not so easy - you would have to extend the X11 protocols to
inform applications when things changed and teach applications what to
do when the display changes from 24bit 1600x1200 to 4bit 640x480

I suspect that there would be resistance from both the open group and
the xfree developers to such a change but in principal it's possible

The reason the X window system does not handle depth and resolution
changes is that in general the hardware it grew up on did not support
on the fly changes fo that nature.

Of course X does allow you (where the hardware supports it) to have
more than one depth active at the same time, which is considerably
more flexible.

This is quite an interesting statement because it shows how your
expectations are shaped by what you're used to. Generally you can't do
much with the fonts which windows apps use so you do have lower the
resolution to make them "bigger". The X Toolkit solved this problem
years ago (it's a pity than we seem to be making retrograde steps
here) - just make the fonts bigger.

What kind of cd-rom is that? some creative labs thing? an old Sony
maybe?

NT sees everything as a SCSI device, even IDE hard disks...

Could you be more precise about the cd-rom model? Linux supports several old
proprietary drives, maybe yours is one of them.

Ask NeoMagic, not the linux community. The reason support for them was
lacking for so long was their obstinate stance against giving driver source
code to the opensource community.

I have done a similar setup before with Windows 95 - NT and Redhat 5.1. You
must be really careful when you partition the remaing space for swap and
system for linux.
Linux can coexiit on the same hdd....
