The sound is working (incl recording). But MIDI is not working at all. I
get the error /dev/sequencer not supported with playmidi.

So I moved /dev/sequencer and linked it to /dev/dsp. Now I get the error
no sound card found when I do playmidi ! Sound (.wav files) still work.

I am using the 1371 driver that comes with linux (RH 5.2)

At the very least, you will need to create a swap partition and such.
And there's the issue of the boot partition... I'd do a minimal
installation, then move your old system over (i.e., /etc, /home, etc.)
partition by partition. Make sure you make a good back up of everything
first!

Does anyone know if there is or will be any future support for Adaptec
Mult-port ethernet cards? If you dont' know what is is I'm talking
about take a look at
http://www.adaptec.com/products/solutions/fastethernet.html

It looks like it would be a very good way to increase one's ethernet
bandwidth or even multi-homing a Linux box w/o having to use several
ethernet cards.

   I've been using an old 486DX2/66 with a pair of c. 1990 Western
Digital cards (since bought by SMC) for a couple of years and get from
700-800 Kbps throughput with heavy filtering. Not all ISA cards are
equal. I suspect NE2000's would have been much slower, especially with
two of them running. WD's are memory mapped while NE2000's are I/O
port devices and require more cycles to copy into and out of.
Look for memcpy_toio() and memcpy_fromio() in the source or a message
like: "eth0: 3c503 - 8kB RAM, 8kB shared mem window at 0xcc000-0xcdfff."
in syslog to determine whether your card is memory mapped.

At /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients I add a case for Gnome to start gnome-session.
At /root, edit file ".wm_style" and change it from FVWM95 to Gnome. then
save it and run startx. That's it.

The E+ is a PCL printer, and should function fine with a generic PCL printer
description, like the HP laserjet //. I think with any *NIX derivation,
it's better to go with an inexpensive PostScript printer though.

You may want to look at the new Lexmark Optra E310, which has full PS Level
2 emulation, 8ppm, USB and parallel ports as standard. - MSRP is $400.
Street price should be slightly lower. This printer replaces the Ep, which
was essentially the E+ with a special PostScript 2 emulation SIMM inside. I
know a kid at school that has one of these running under Linux too. You
might still be able to find the Ep at a good price online.

My Optra RT+ worked perfectly under Caldera, and Irix 5.3 - in the
Postscript emulation mode.

Hi,

Anyone have redhat linux 5.2 and the diamond viper 550 card (TNT
based) and successfully upgraded XFree86 to ver 3.3.3.1?

I'm having one hell of a time with this... due in part to my lack of
knowledge of linux and poor documentation.

Brief details.. I've downloaded the files from the XFree86.org site
and have run their suggested method for updating...

Either the documention is lacking??? or I've screwed up somewhere...

I cant star XFree now.. I get a msg the says "couldn't determine where
you have Xfree86 installed. If you have XFree86 properly installed,
set the XWINHOME environment variable to point to the parent dir of
the XFree86 bin dir.

Well how the hell do you do this and I wonder if this will be the
magic cure? Not sure if I'll be "playing" around with this OS much
longer if I have to jump through so many hurdles to get my hardware to
work properly.

Anyone upgraded their ver of XFree86 to the 3.3.3.1 ver with this card
and had it work ok... If so what did you do? any editing of files
to go along with this? Better instructions would be appreciated from
one who has not had any experience with unix or linux.

I've started reading one the "thick" books dealing with Linux but so
far the solution has not "appeared"

if you can hack the celeron to SMP and even overclock it, it can BLOW AWAY the
p-pro.

my work system (previous job) was the 512k ppro200 with 256meg edo ram.

my home system is a dual celeron 300a o/c at 450. the compile time on the
recent kernel (keeping build options the same on both systems) was:

single ppro 200/512k = 8 minutes
dual cel 450/128k    = 2 minutes
single cel 450/128k  = 4 minutes

so the celeron system is about twice as fast as the ppro, doing the same
kernel build.

I was shocked how long the 2.2 kernel took to build on the ppro. and that
chip alone was about $1k and the mobo was about $600 or so, just 2 yrs ago ;-)

I have a same MS 2-button PS2 mouse like yours. While I was installing the
RH5.2, I use the wrong protocol. After installing, I have to run
mouseconfig to select the right protocol--Generic Mouse (PS2) for it. If
you run stratx immediately, the mouse wouldn't work. I have to re-run
XConfigurator to setup the X-windows again. Then the mouse would work. You
may want to try this.

Hi,

Wonder if any of u can help me out with a little problem i'm
having with my Teles ISDN card & Linux...

I can't seem to get the kernel to recognize the interrupt
i've set for the card... here's the details..

I'm using kernel 2.0.36 and a Teles 16.3c ISA PnP card...

Here's the relevant section of my /usr/src/linux/.config :-

=========================================
CONFIG_MODULES=y
CONFIG_ISDN=m
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_PPP_VJ=y
CONFIG_ISDN_MPP=y
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_LOOP=m
CONFIG_ISDN_DRV_HISAX=m
CONFIG_HISAX_EURO=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_0=y
CONFIG_HISAX_16_3=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELES3C=y
CONFIG_HISAX_TELESPCI=y
CONFIG_HISAX_S0BOX=y
=========================================

I've compiled the ISDN subsystem as a module and also the HiSax drivers
for Teles 16xx all as modules.

Booted up with the new kernel

Here's my /etc/isapnp.conf file :-

=========================================
(READPORT 0x0203)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING

(CONFIGURE TAG2620/209717183 (LD 0
(IO 0 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0300))
(INT 0 (IRQ 10 (MODE +E)))
(NAME "TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c Plug&Play}")
(ACT Y)
))
(WAITFORKEY)
=========================================

Did an "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" and got the following :-

========================================= lspci not found, so PCI resource
conflict not checked Board 1 has Identity bd 0c 80 07 bf 20 26 27 50:
TAG2620 Serial No 209717183 [checksum bd] TAG2620/209717183[0]{TELES.S0/16.3c
Plug&Play}: Port 0x300; IRQ10 --- Enabled OK
=========================================

OK.. no problem so far... then i did the modprobe hisax like this and
got the results as follows:-

=========================================
# modprobe hisax type=14 protocol=2 irq=10 io=0x300
ISDN subsystem Rev: 1.44.2.9/1.41.2.11/1.48.2.27/none/none loaded
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 1
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 2
Teles 16.3c: IRQ(10) getting no interrupts during init 3
HiSax: Card Teles 16.3c not installed !
Initialization of hisax failed
ISDN-subsystem unloaded
=========================================

Something's not right here... can't pinpoint exactly where it is... tried
putting the card to another PC but got the same results... MAYBE it could
be the card being faulty OR something else... hope u can help out here..
Thanx ;) ;)

I am sure that the drive is IDE. Up until this 486, I have never used a CD which didn't
attach to the IDE controller. Also the sound card connector is marked IDE. And as I
said, this drive was working with this sound card under windows 95. ( I think the drive
was originally attached to an old Pentium I had)

Have you tried using the OSS (Open Sound System) utility from 4Front
Technologies? (http://www.4front-tech.com) It sits in the background and
handles any sound calls instead of the kernel having to do so. It supports
the PAS16, although they do say you can't have more than one in your system,
and I'm sure the 20 US dollar registration would be cheaper than getting a new
sound card :-) Before you ask, no I don't work for them, but am a very happy
customer of theirs (happy because I _really_ don't want to recompile a very
nicely working kernel<g>) The OSS is shareware, so you can even try it to see
if it fits your system before having to shell out any cash (works for 20
minutes before needing re-initialisation ( ./soundoff then ./soundon )

Anyway, I hope this helps.

find . | grep -v /mnt | grep -v /proc | cpio -dpmu /mnt

You should be able to edit your lilo.conf to point to the new drive,
then run lilo, then boot the new drive. This has worked for me, but I
may have left something out, so check the man pages and THINK before
you act.

    How long does it take to fill up a 64k code+data segment? Now
    how long does it take to fill up a 4gb code+data segment? I'm
    sure that one of the days we'll see programs that are larger
    than this, but it may not be for a couple of year yet. If we
    can live with a maximum of 4gb of space per program (that's 4
    times the current limitation, 2 times if you do kernel hacks)
    the kernel will be the only entity that needs to worry about
    segment+offset addresses.

    segment+offset addresses are a bit of a pain, but if you're
    programming in a higher level language they certainly aren't more of
    a pain than the 68ks separate address and data registers were.

    And recertify. So you'll lose three months doing the certification,
    but your competitors will gladly stand down and not take advantage
    of you being out of the market.

Subject: home lan/server advice
Date: 19 Mar 1999 13:53:43 GMT

In thinking about possible upgrades to my home computer, I've come to
the decision that I want to build a second computer. I will use one as a
workstation (which will dualboot win95, I'll need it for school ): and
one as a server. The server will be responsible for: IP Masquerading for
the workstation over my DSL line, Low volume web hosting, Mail
Serving (which would include NFS mounting /var/spool on the
workstation), and running an Xserver for the workstation. Right now,
I have the following:

Intel P233/MMX, 96 Mb EDO RAM, 4.5 Gb UltraWide SCSI Hard drive, SCSI
CD-R, 4.3 Gb IDE Hard drive, 24x IDE CD-ROM, Soundblaster AWE 64, S3
video w/ 4Mb.

I plan to purchase enough parts to build a bare-bones SCSI system, most
likely with an inexpensive Celeron for now. Now for the questions :)

1) Am I correct to assume that on-board SCSI will be faster than a PCI
card? If so, can someone recommend a good one, I'd prefer to go ahead
and spring for Ultra 2 Wide.

2) What hardware should I use for which machine? I can swap hardware
between the new and old machines to get the best arrangement. The CD-R
needs to be in the workstation, but other than that, I'm open. The
workstation will be primarily used for: Audio playing, mixing,
cd-burning, etc, Web surfing, and light developement work. Should the
faster CPU/disk system be the workstation, or the server (since it will
be running some apps which are displayed on the workstation)? In
otherwords, will the faster equipment benefit me more running X,
Netscape and a few other big apps or to be displayed ont the
workstation, or on the workstation, running audio applications and
displaying X.

I'll appreciate any advice offered. This will be my first experience
managing more than 1 desktop PC, so I'm not sure of how to best
distribute loads on the machines.
