That's not entirely true, at the moment, in the stable kernel there is no
USB support, but there is a USB development project, can't remember the
link but you can get to it off the www.linux.org page. And according to
the page there will be initial support for USB integrated into the kernel
shortly, mainly so the iMac keyboard and mouse will be supported (along
with all the new G3s) but at the moment you can download the development
edition which is apparently quiet stable for use with keyboards and mice.

I have troubles getting my soundcard working. It's an Aztech Sound Galaxy PnP

I get an 'Unable to open the audio device / Unable to reset audio device'

used, and/or the exact IO/DMA/IRQ settings required, let me know.

Because they are afraid that there is more to reality than they have ever confronted.
That there are doors that they are afraid to go in and they don't want us to go in

because if we go in there, we might learn something that they don't know. And that

M$ is good at making things stick and they're heavily into usability
these days which is good.

However the X toolkit and the "editres" protocol have been around for
years and allow you to do on-the-fly changes to program setting.

The fact that the unix community has never held with the "single
organisation which makes the rules and has the sheer presence which
makes people follow them" means that most programs don't make use of
Xt and not all of those which do support editres. This is a genuine
failing on the part of Unix vendors and users but don't assume that M$
has all the good ideas

It's not so easy - you would have to extend the X11 protocols to
inform applications when things changed and teach applications what to
do when the display changes from 24bit 1600x1200 to 4bit 640x480

I suspect that there would be resistance from both the open group and
the xfree developers to such a change but in principal it's possible

The reason the X window system does not handle depth and resolution
changes is that in general the hardware it grew up on did not support
on the fly changes fo that nature.

Of course X does allow you (where the hardware supports it) to have
more than one depth active at the same time, which is considerably
more flexible.

This is quite an interesting statement because it shows how your
expectations are shaped by what you're used to. Generally you can't do
much with the fonts which windows apps use so you do have lower the
resolution to make them "bigger". The X Toolkit solved this problem
years ago (it's a pity than we seem to be making retrograde steps
here) - just make the fonts bigger.

Not sure what else you are trying to use this machine for, but if Linux
is to be this machine's only OS, then you may be able to get it to install with
RH 5.2. You will also need 2 DOS formated floppy disks, a working machine with
a version of DOS on it, and a CD ROM drive.

If this is a possibility, let me know, and I'll post the rest of the
story...

I make it work?

By SMC EZ.. which one are you referring to? I use the SMC EZ 10/100.
There's also the EtherEZ and the EZ 10. The SMC EZ 10/100 uses the
realtek chipset. I compiled the drivers into the kernel by enabling
development so I can use those beta drivers. You'll see the option for
the Realtek 8039/8139. That's the one you want to use if you have the
same card that I do. The name of the driver is rtl8039.c in case you're
interested in compiling it as a module (why?) Hope this helps.

Anyone know what framebuffers S/Linux supports in 24-bit mode?

>From the FAQ, this would appear to be cg14 (SX), tcx and zx, but
a post I saw somewhere said cg14 was only supported in 8-bit mode.

This would suck since zx is no longer supported for Solaris, and
tcx seems quite hard to find.

I've a ViewSonic 17" P775 at home, and have spec'ed the 19" GT series for projects at
work. Flawless in my experience, including eyestrain perspective.

As for cards, similar story for Matrox. I've used the Mystique 220 and Millenium
II. Next card will be one of their newer AGP 250MHz cards.
