I have an AMD K6-300 in an Asus P5A ATX motherboard, 64M PC100 SDRAM, ATI
Xpert98 PCI video card, Symbios 53c815 based Fast SCSI-2 card, Intel
EEPRo10/100 Ethernet card, Fujitsu 6.4M UDMA hard drive. Everything works
fine. I started using it with a Debian Linux distribution sporting the 2.0.35
Kernel. I've since compiled about 10 different versions of the 2.2 Kernel
series, from pr3 through pre7, and now 2.2.3. No faults, no crashes.

Does your system have adequate cooling ? I'm using an AOpen mid-tower case.
I added a 2nd fan in the front of the case. I'm using a Vantec heatsink/fan
with heat conductive compound between the CPU and the heatsink.

I know some older AMD K6 CPU's (or was it the K6-2?) had a bug in them that
resulted in Sig 11 errors when compiling stuff. I bought mine around November
and it has been very solid. I run Netscape, scan stuff on my Microtek SCSI
scanner, edit them in Gimp, print stuff to my DJ660, all without crashing.

Has anyone tried to get X windows to run on a Toshiba Satellite 2535 CDS
laptop? The chipset it uses is Chips & Technologies 6900. I am using
Red Hat 5.2 and I have tried some of the drivers for other C & T
chipsets and I havn't been able to make one work. Any ideas?

Also, with this laptop when it is in the regular text mode the display
doesn't fill the screen. It fills it ithe horizontal direction but not
vertical. It looks like one of those videos in the wide screen formats.
Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help,
Brent

What kind of cd-rom is that? some creative labs thing? an old Sony

NT sees everything as a SCSI device, even IDE hard disks...

Could you be more precise about the cd-rom model? Linux supports several old
proprietary drives, maybe yours is one of them.

Go to http://www.xfree86.org and download the SVGA X11 server from the
FTP site. You don't need the entire update to XFree86 3.3.3.1, the SVGA
server by itself works fine.

I've got this same card running 8 virtual screens at 1280x1024x32bpp
under KDE. As time goes on, I'll be spending more and more time under
Linux and less and less under MS products (though I have to support the
MS products, so I have to keep them around).

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone has experienced setting up a
linux box with the following card:

ATI RAGE Pro 2X AGP w/ TV-OUT

and if so,

what are your experiences hooking up the TV out
to a TV to see if any of the drivers for the
video card show anything on the screen..

The reason why I am asking is that I am developing
a embedded linux box with this specific card built
in and would like to know if the drivers that linux
already has is enough to run the video board.

Your replies are greatly appreciated.

That's because soundblaster 64/128pci don't have a wavetable on board, they
provide you with software to do the wavetable thing.
But of course , this software is only for windows.
there is a software wavetable for linux though, TIMIDITY

check out  http://www.goice.co.jp/member/mo/timidity/

I got midi working with a SB 64pci, but it is only working with TKtimidity, a
TK based interface., I couldn't get timidity to work with Kmidi or any other
interface.
Also it works in Netscape, but I got a lot of reverb and hicups .

Hi Steve,
I had the same problem as you, not being able to use my printer after the
kernel upgrade. I compiled my kernel with all the necessary support for the
printer as modules, but I must have installed modprobe wrongly so these
modules were not loaded on demand. As I had no time to look through each
and every configuration file because my exams are coming, I recompiled my
kernel and disabled module support. Now everything is fine.
I don't know if you have a problem with modprobe, but if you get messages
at boot time indicating that there were some problems with modules, you can
either try to fix the problem, or just compile a monolithic kernel.
Hope this was helpful, I don't know too much cuz I' m a newbie myself.

        Hello. I've got RH 5.2 on a Fujitsu 420D notebook, and am

        The cardmgr identifies the card just fine, assigns it an unused

        get anywhere on the NW. Ping anything, and I get 'network

        I believe my routing tables are fine (they're equivalent to my

If only MS used their own standard dialogs more often... :^)

The problem is that those people who could have done it, didn't. They
gave us Athena and Motif instead. This is widely viewed as a major

PostScript has a number of big advantages (device-independent, easy to
scale and rotate and put n-up, embeddable within itself and other
documents, etc.) A pity that Adobe aren't keen on DPS being used...

Bzzzt! There is a font server for X that supports TrueType fonts.
Don't know if it is supplied with any distributions, but it ought to
be.

You're looking at the wrong part of Unix culture! Event-driven
programming has been here for a very long time indeed...

Looking back over what I've written, I suppose the problem with Unix
for a long time is not that there were good solutions available, but
that they were only ever available commercially, and then when that
commercial interest decided that it could temporarily increase their
cash-flow by restricting access to the tech, everyone just went
elsewhere. This has helped fuel the FSF for a long time, and we
should all be grateful indeed.

MS at least play silly buggers with their customers and competitors
*differently* to that...

I am considering buying the Adaptec 2906 SCSI card for a P-133, 64MB RAM,
2-2.5GB IDE hard drives. The system is a dual boot win98 and RedHat 5.2

Is this card supported under Linux? The only info I can find lists 29xx
series, can this card use those drivers?

Also, if anyone has experience running a CD recorder on older hardware like
this, either under win98 or under linux, I'd appreciate that feedback.

When mounting it's says:

mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,

I've found my solution, after reading the NG. append="hdc=ide-scsi" is
a helpful hint. NOTE it is "ide-scsi" not "scsi-ide".

The trick is to use modules, I have
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR_VENDOR=y
CONFIG_CHR_DEV_SG=m

Now, recompile the kernel, install new kernel and modules.

Case 1: You don't need CDR, just normal Linux

You are already done. No extra step need to use /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc as IDE-CDROM.

Case 2: You need CDR[W],

Just copy the lilo.conf entries from original one to another one, have
it named linux-cdr, e.g.,

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.3
        label=linux-normal
        root=/dev/hda6
        read-only
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.3
        label=linux-cdr
        root=/dev/hda6
        append="hdb=ide-scsi hdc=ide-scsi"
        read-only

Re-run lilo and now choose linux-cdr in bootup. Now both IDE CD will be
emulated as SCSI CDROM/CDR.

Fireup xcdroast and dance :-)

I have an extra script that works with RH5.2, put it in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.
So you don't even need to manually type 'modprobe ide-scsi'. Work even for
both case 1 and 2.

--cut here--
#!/bin/sh

# Set the path
PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
export PATH

# we use convention of linux-whatever-version-cdr
# whenever -cdr is found, we believe we need the emulation
#
echo -n "Checking for ide-scsi emulation..."
if grep -q -e -cdr /proc/cmdline ; then
        echo "found"
        modprobe ide-scsi
else
        echo "not found"
fi

I have a Toshiba Satellite 230 CX. I am experiencing problems installing
Linux (Debian 2.0) from a CD.

At first I tried to boot the computer from the CD by changing the boot
sequence BIOS setting. However, that was the only BIOS setting I changed. It
appeared the computer tried to boot Linux but aborted immediately every
time.

Next I disabled CPU caching. This seemed to solve the problem. Everything
seemed OK at first, but then it turned out the machine was working extremely
slowly. (The installation process took HOURS.)

I have had a look at some recommendations for Linux installation on
different Toshiba laptops, but I have not found mine.

Any suggestions (especially concerning BIOS settings and configuration of X

Hi Subbarao,

It looks like the driver you ran is ok but you need to make a partition on the
zip disk and then format it. This will then give you an sda1 and you then
should be able to mount it. I was doing the same thing you were doing untill I
read about having to partition and format the disk first. Type /sbin/fdisk
/dev/sda to partition the disk and then mkfs -t ext2 /dev/sda1 to format it
using the native linux file system.

Hope this helps. Also if you could tell me where you got the driver from I
would appreciate it. I lost track of where I got the imm driver from.

I found the following patch on a German newsgroup. It would be nice if
it were included in the official version of linux...:

In ~linux/drivers/sound/sb_common.c, on line 778 (my be different for
2.2.x):

       if (hw_config->dma2 == -1)
         devc->dma16 = devc->dma8;
-       else if (hw_config->dma2 < 5 || hw_config->dma2 > 7)
+       else if (hw_config->dma2 < 0 || hw_config->dma2 > 7)
         {
           printk ("SB16: Bad or missing 16 bit DMA channel\n");
           devc->dma16 = devc->dma8;

Hey I just went out and bought a new 56k us robotics fax modem. I know the
winmodem wont work with Linux but will the fax work. Also how do I
configure it settings like changing from tone to pulse dialing. I'm using

Thanks,

Subject: Big Swap-space necessary?

(newbie)

Hello,

I notice when I running several programms (processes?) in X-windows with
system monitoring-thingy, that my swappartition of 128 mb isn't used a lot.
Would it be wise to change this size, and if so, how do I do manage?

Thanks

Lex
