hi all,
can someone guess why DPT chose to release Linux I2O drivers for their
Smart RAID V family (1554 | 2654 | Millenium) only for Red Hat 5.2 ...
excuse me if i'm mistaken but i thought it is a trivial matter to
release drivers for all (or most) Linux distributions ... aren't they
supposed to be (basically) the same thing?
it also seems that you can only install the DPT drivers if you do a
complete (re)install ... or so the documentation says ...
i would really appreciate an answer

Thats an very seldom card - and an very special too. There is no real
support yet.
Try to get the neccessary informations - and ask *iamond to support
writing the X11-driver.
Instead of the GL4000 use e.g. one of the the ELSA Gloria cards -
nearly the same good GL-performance with NT -
and support under X11 .... www.elsa.de

I am trying to setup my printer (unfortunately Lexmark 5700).
My system is Linux 2.0.36 (suse package)
The setup tool (Yast) does not allow me to configure a printer (option in
hardware menu is disabled).
Who can help?

I am having trouble configuring my S3 Trio 3D graphics card in X. A
friend came over and installed a newer version of a driver but I am
still not getting full color and resolution. He felt that the card might
not have any better support.
I am new to Linux, and my command of commands is limited for now, but,
I would like to try and get this card to work. It might all be in there
but I cannot figure out where to expiriment with the
settings--Xconfigurator? or XF86conf?
If this proves to be hopless I am also thinking of installing another
card that would work with Win 98 and Linux, so if anyone has a
suggestion as to which card is "made" for Linux, a reply would be
appreciated.

John - I have the USR Courier I-Modem working under both RH5.2 (at home)
and RH5.0 (at work). I have them setup with mgetty so that ppp is
automatically detected when a LCP packet is detected. They also work just
fine in terminal mode. You should check that the device is correct when
using minicom.
Best of luck - Chris

Hi there,
I'm trying to install linux on a Cpq Deskpro 4000 with a 200 Mhz Pentium
Pro... without luck the kernel (2.0.36 from Slackware 3.6) crashes with
a 0c exception.
I boot from DOS with loadlin due to the PCI relocation problem of the
Cpq (so I use MOVEPCI...)
Did anybody already encounter this type of problem?
Did anybody got Linux running on such a machine?
Thanx in advance.

I installed RH 5.1 on a ThinkPad 365XD. XFree86 works fine
and was able to recompile the kernel with no problems.
I have a Megahertz XJ2288 modem in socket 1, and a
Megahertz CC10BT/2 ethernet card in socket 2. I am not using
the ethernet card at all.
Setserial responds that the modem has the proper UART and is
on IRQ 3, 03f8...win98 had reported it was on IRQ4.
When I run minicom, the modem responds 'OK' to the default init
string. It responds 'OK' to 'at'. When I use the 'atdtxxx-xxxx'
command,
it just sits there...and then eventually comes back with 'no carrier'.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

Subject: Smart-2 Array Controller problems
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 22:49:02 GMT
Hoy,
I'm trying to get my array controller running on a Proliant 5000 4-way.
I've got the drivers, and have compiled them into the kernel (2.0.36). I've
applied the DAC960 patches and have run MKDEV.ida.
When I boot the machine loop.o complains about unresolved symbols and the
status command won't do anything to the /dev/ida/* devices.
What am I missing?
I tried compiling the cpqarray driver as a module, but got unresolved symbols
when I attempted insmod: max_segments, blk_dev, max_sectors.
All help appreciated. I've attached my kernel config file as well.
Regards,

Hey all -
I just replaced the SCSI controller (AHA-2940U) in my machine with
a newer one (AHA-2930U2 - uses AIC7890 chipset), as I needed to use the old
one in one of my office machines. Linux can't see it, even though it's
technically an AIC-78xx board. I can't find any references to it in any of
the Linux newsgroups. Anyone out there using this board with Linux? I'm
running RedHat 5.2, upgraded to the 2.2.3 kernel. The board comes up fine
under Windoze.
Thanks - Bob

I'd say to go with the Asus P2B - I have one (and love it), and have heard
very few bad things about is, and almost all good. On the other hand I've
heard nothing about the BM6, good or bad. You may be stuck with a
Socket370 motherboard in any case - looking at pricewatch, it looks like
that's the only way to get the 433Mhz Celeron. You'd be doing well to
find a Socket370-version of the P2B.

I have a Symbios based board, and am satisfied with it. I find its every
bit as good as an Adaptec in one of the computers at work, and costs quite
a bit less.

EIDE may transfer data every bit as fast as the SCSI, but, if you go SCSI,
you'll really notice the difference when the thing starts swapping.

You don't mount tapes - they do NOT have filesystems to be mounted. Data
to them is written in a stream. You can, essentially, use cat and pipe
the output to tape device (done that, years ago...;<). But tar, cpio,
bru and friends are MUCH better. For tar, I would just use tar -cvf
/dev/device_file_of_your_tape <filenames or directory name under which
You want to grab everything>. Don't backup /, as I once did: it will
grab /proc filesystem, which will shhot You out the window if You try to
restore it....

Not that this helps you, but I have a 7890 on my motherboard, and redhat
5.2 detects it properly when it first installs. I also have had it work
fine with a 2940U2W which is also a 7890. I'm still running 2.0.36

Good luck,

|can't get to work. I've tried some suggestions from this newsgroup already
|but unfortunately without success. All I do is installing Linux from
|scratch, skipping the network set-up. When Linux is running I do a "insmod
|tlan" at the prompt. Then "netconf" at the prompt to configure the device
|(eth0) and to specify my IP settings. After I "activate changes" I expect
my
|network adapter to get activated but this doesn't happen. During shutdown a
|message "unknown device eth0" appears. Does anyone know what's going wrong
|here? I could use some help.
Those NICs shipped with three different chipsets over the production life
so far. Pull the card, and look at the big chips. Let us know which once
they are, and we can continue. The TLAN chip is on the integrated NIC on
the DeskPro 4000/6000 series, and many docking stations. I do not believe
it was on the PCI card, but with Compaq, who knows. :-)

There are a few utilities, most of which use SnowBlind Alliance's rio command
line utility. Do a search for "rio" on freshmeat.net for a complete list.
