Right now it seems to be setup where linux will startup only when I have

and can start directly off of the drive?

I'm interested in buying a cd burner, and I'm concerned about getting one
that is ready for linux (i'm almost ready myself, still a few problems yet
before I'll convert my main computer though). Any suggestions on particular
drives would be a real help. I want one that will burn single-use and
multiwrite cds. I've decided on a external scsi, easy to move between
machines, but not flakey like a printer-port model would be. Thanks.
Any comments on the LACIE 4X4X16 CD-RW PC/MAC EXT SCSI?

Hi,
I have a AMDK6-II PC with Win98 and Linux RH5.2. It has Rockwell HCF 56K
Data/Fax modem (PCI/CPQB0BC is an identifier). On win98, this modem is
connected to COM2 port. This is not working with Linux(?). I tried to use
the device file (modem link to cua1) /dev/cua1 as specified in HOWTO(?) as
COM2 - cua1 mapping i'm getting tcgetattr error when I tried to use chat
program. If I create a link of /dev/modem to /dev/cua0 atleast I'm not
getting any error. Now here I'm confused because of this behaviour. What
should I do? I'm not able to connect to intenet or send email from linux. My
ISP is GTE and I have all the required information about domain name,
nameserver etc. Can anybody answer these questions?
Many many thanks in advance!!!

This really only makes a difference for people who don't overclock,
because those are the only people who would consider going from a
celeron to a "real" PII to be a worthwhile upgrade.
If you are successfully overclocking, then spending extra money to
give yourself the option to upgrade to a chip that isn't any faster
than what you already have is hardly an "investment".

I have a Tekram 680 (the ISA one... not the VL)... and Linux can see the
controller
without any kernel mods... are you talking about an enhanced driver that
allows faster
disk access? I always thought these controllers implemented caching
through their
hardware (that is why you can install SIMMs on them) - and all of the
setup functions were through an on-board BIOS (I am making an assumption
here that the VL is the same as
the ISA -- at least the manual makes this out to be true)).
In answer to your question, I am not aware of any driver(s), though I am
interested
in the topic...

With the great press Linux has been getting, there have been a lot of
very "new" people asking questions. The responses have often been a bit
harsh, :-) and that has even brought comment in the press. In keeping with
the image of the friendly Penguin, I am trying to answer these types of
question in as friendly and helpful a way as possible. We will see how long
my sanity lasts. :-)
Basically, you said, "I have a car. Is it the right one?" In you post,
you should have put both the brand and model of the card, as well as the
chipset used. To find the chipset, look in the docs, or just look at the
car, and read the numbers on the biggest chips there.
As an example, I grabbed a "Generic 10BT PCI NIC" out of my cabinet. It
is a LanPro EN-5200PXA. So far, this is unhelpful, as most people have
never heard of LanPro... So I looked at the card. The big chip had a Novel
sticker on it, so I peeled it off. Under it had the number RTL8029 with
more numbers on line 2. Looking at the Networking Howto at
http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO-11.html I don't find it.
Therefore, I would not recommend using this card.

None of your current windows apps will run. Linux is completely different
operating system then Windows 98 and thus requires different software.
Fortunately there is alot of software available for Linux but don't expect to
be using it like Win 98 within a couple of days. I am fairly aggressive pc user
and and it took me a week just to get the X -windows server running at
1024x768. Linux has a totally different way of recogning your drives and
storage devices.. no more A: , C: , D:
If you wish to try it I would suggest you partition your drive and install it
to run along with Win 98 so you have it to fall back on when you want to be in
an O/S that you know how to use :) Also do some searches on the web and read up
on how best to install it and what not. I would suggest RedHat 5.2 but that is
only because I am familiar with it and have had success with it.
Good luck and you can start your Linux decision with this site,
http://www.magma.ca/~bklimas/
I found some good information and liks there.
Good luck,

This is actually changing. I don't think the Linux support is in yet, but
shortly you should be able order Linux preinstalled from Dell, at least
according to the annoucements (I think you can order Linux for servers now,
workstations should be shortly). Dell however is somewhat pricey (but your

I may have a partial solution to your problem. I also had some problem with
this socalled 'vitual modes'. The thing that worked for me was to simply
delete all lines in the display/screen sections in the XF86config file that
began with 'virtual mode'. (in stead of deleting those lines you can also
put a '#' character at the beginning of the line so the line isn't used by
X).
Hope this is useful to you,

I have a 'Star NX1000 Rainbow' printer.
is there a special driver for this printer?
I run RedHat 5.2 on this system, and in printtools, it does not have a option
for the nx1000 colour.
I wish to be able to print some minor stuff in colour....
Much thanks.

| I'm looking for a fairly cheap laser printer(or an ink-jet
|w/ laser quality). I'm looking at the HP Laserjet 1100se,
|or possibly the Deskjet 895C. Are these printers any good
|under Linux? I would also appreciate any other suggestions
|you can give. Thanks.
With all of the bizarre support policies coming out of HP these days,
combined with the removing more from the printer and putting it in the
driver attitude, we have been looking at other options at the office lately.
I have been VERY pleasantly surprised by the stuff form Oki. The cheap
little LED printers <like the $149 4W, and the $249 6W> handle abuse like
nothing else in there price range. They are slow with first page out, but
the quality is as good as any laser I have seen from HP. <we have about 30
HPs from the 5si to old LaserJet 3s> The bigger models also come with
PostScript! The OkiPage 12i is fast, <12 ppm> high res <600x1200> high ram
<4-32 meg> high capacity <850 sheets> PCL6, and PostScript Level 2, all for
$599 at CDW. The OkiPage 8c is a color 8ppm with PostScript Level 3 for
just $3495.

Actually, it may not. While trying to help is good, giving the wrong
information can cause more harm than good. Please don't take this as an

are a hel of a lot of them lately, and that is a good thing>
|During installation you cannot configure the NIC. Therefore after complete

Compaq uses a LOT of chips. The even have complete units built by other
companies. The bastard "tlan" chip was used in the DeskPro 4000/6000
series, and early ProLiant 850 servers. It was also used in many laptop
docking stations. It was put on a "few" NIC cards, however, very few... I
am looking at a Netflex 3/PCI modular card. This is the one with a 10BT
module you swap out for a 100BT module in the framework. It is a TLAN. I
am looking at a Netelligent 10/100 TX PCI UTP with an Intel chip. The point
is, saying you have a Compaq NIC, is like saying you have a 3com NIC. It
does not narrow the field.
FYI - A little while ago, Compaq blacklisted the tlan for all business
product. It was found to have a unacceptable high CPU load. Newer machines
will most likely have Intel FastEther chips in them.
