I have a 450Mhz P2 with the same modem and installed Linux today. After no
luck in getting the modem to work, I did a little research on the Compaq web
site only to find out this is one of those F**king WinModems. Don't even
waste your time trying to get it to work. Just go buy a real modem and also
write a little note to Compaq telling them to spend the extra $5 for real
modems.
> aureall 8820 pci audio card
I'm not having any luck getting this to work either. I know I read on the
Aureal site a while back that Compaq had a special version of these
chips/cards. It's probably the same deal as with the modem, they wanted to
save $5 so you can only use it with Windoze. I've got a SB type card I bought
for a older computer I have. I may just stick that in. Or maybe when I'm
ordering a new modem, I'll just spring for one of those new SB Live cards.

It's kind of a pain to install Linux on a HD larger than about 8GB because of
some BIOS/Boot problems. There is info in one of the HOW-TO files
(Large-Hard- Drive-HOW-TO maybe?) that explains the problem, but not how to
fix it. Basicly, you have to make sure that the partion that Linux boots from
is in the first 1024 cylinders of the hard disk. I just made my Windows98
partion about 6GBs and then made a Linux partion of about 1GB for the kernal
and other stuff. I'm going to use the rest of the HD for other Windows or
Linux partions as needed.
Good Luck,

Yes, this is what I thought. In fact recompiling the kernel where the
sound option was already turned on according to the config menu does not
change the situation, implying that sound support is by default in the
redhat kernel. Given that the card is a SB16 and not a SB16 PnP The
autodetect or pnpdump don't seem to allow any automatic detection. My
impression is that I need to do something else to be able to write my
explicit specification of the card DMA, IRQ ... somewhere and access
/dev/audio.

I just downloaded and installed the free version of StarOffice on top of my
LinuxMandrake. It seems to have installed ok, but the readme file mentioned
that it would automatically install into KDE. The install procedure never
questioned me about that, and I can't find where I could start it from KDE.
I can't even figure out how to start it manually. I have found a file
called soffice.bin, but so far haven't gotten it to run. Please help a
newbie.

I'm in a slightly different situation. I already have 2 laser printers, one
is an Oki 4W, which you mentioned, and the other is a Panasonic KX-P6100.
Will either work under Linux? If so, which printer do I tell the setup
routine I'm using? How do I print to it? Does the printing have to be done
by GhostScript?
Any help for this newbie would be appreciated.
Also, I've had thoughts about getting a Canon BJC-5000, because I'd like a
color printer (my old one broke), and I like the option to do B size
printouts. Can this be made to work under Linux? How?

You generally have to run LILO every time, because when LILO builds a
boot block, it writes the current location of the zImage file into it.
When you rebuild the kernel, it's fairly unlikely that this file will be
in the same spot on the disk.

Try removing (if you have it) the "auth" line from /etc/ppp/options.
