My biggest success spending that much was getting my wife a diamond
anniversary ring that she didn't expect. :-)

I am using a system that I requested a local computer shop to build
for me and am quite happy with it, using primarily Linux (99%) and
Windows 98 when I must. I am using an AMD K6-2 processor with
no problem. Here is my setup:

     AMD K6-3/350 MHz
128 MB DIMM SDRAM (single 10 ns stick)
     1.44 MB Floppy
     IDE CD-ROM
6.4 GB Seagate IDE 7200 RPM hard disk
Conner 2/4 GByte IDE Tape drive
     Sound Blaster Sound card
8 MB Matrox Millenium II/G200 video card
     21" KDS Monitor

Of course, processor speeds are higher now (they've even released
the AMD-K6 III chips now.

I find that establishing a rapport with a local vendor is a great way to
go.
Let him know up front that you plan to run Linux on it and make sure
he's willing to swap components if they don't work properly with Linux.

Linux has great device support, but I would suggest you check out the
linux hardware document *BEFORE* you buy to make sure you are
getting hardware that will work:

     http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HARDWARE

Hope this helps

I am considering purchasing the Netgear Network Starter kit SB104. I want
to use this for a duel Winblows 98 and Redhat 5.2 configuration. Does
anyone know if the Netgear cards are supported in Linux? The kit contains 2
dual-speed network cards (fa310tx) and a 4 port hub (en104tp).
Thanks for the help.

Look at the full model number (I have a 560X) and then take a look at the
IBM web site. FYI, the 560X has a P 233MMX CPU.

Actually, if You have FP-heavy code (graphics, raytracing, FEA, CFD,
Stats, simulation), P6-optimised code can gain You as much as 15-20%,
compared to i386.

Except a Ford Truck is a drop in replacement for a Chevy

with the 'pissing on logos' stickers in the world can be
free to choose what they like and not forced to tolerate
'the one and only option' merely because hardware

Just ask one of those guys that have a 'pissing on the
other guys logo' stickers on their car/truck how they
would like a world where 'the other guy' was the only
        accepted/acceptable option.

But the color doesn't work. None of the other drivers work at all.

I have modular print support installed and am working with RH5.2.

I assume your motherboard _would_ assign the cards different
IRQs if there were enough available. If possible, you might
try disabling features you don't currently use. (Examples:
USB, infrared, EPP (for printer), second ide channel, even a
serial might not be needed...)

As far as I know, there isn't any DVD support in Linux yet. Some
people are working on the filesystem, but that may not be enough
to get movies playing on your screen. Those add-in cards might
turn out to be a real pain.

Subject: Video accel w/ slow machine?
Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 05:36:23 GMT

Hello!

I was wondering, will an accelerated video card reduce the system load on a
wimpy machine? I put and ATI Expert XL in my Dell Optiplex 120 (acts more
like a 90) w/ 64MB at work running WindowMaker @ 16bpp and the load is always
around 0.65 :~( The card is not accelerated. The 3.3.3.1 docs says it is but
I think they snuck in a new chip into this particular card or something
because I couldn't get it to work. I hacked XF86Config fairly thoroughly too.
Anyway, if I get an accellerated card will it assume certain drawing
responsibilties and save clock cycles thus reducing the load? It used to be
0.01 when I ran fvwm. Plus what cards have support for accel? I can't find
examples of good cards. The ATI cards are not accelerated over 8bpp. Can't
find a Millennium II anymore. So whats the best card to solve this problem.
I'm willing to pay $200 if necessary.

Thanks,
Michael B. Allen

That probably won't help much, as the 24MB suggests that he's got a
560 or 560E, which aren't current models.

Assuming that he's running Linux, he can always look at the BogoMIPS
reported in /var/log/dmesg (a Pentium runs about 2 BogoMIPS/MHz, so
the 560X reports 462 BogoMIPS), or run dosemu ("dos") and look at the
speed that it reports.

Subject: pb installing rh52 linux on scsi jaz drive
Date: Sat, 27 Mar 1999 16:54:25 +0100

hello,
while trying to install Redhat linux 5.2 on my SCSI 2GB jaz drive, I
encounter a problem :
an error message 'kernel panic : VFS : unable to mount root fs on 8:22'
comes up.
I tried several possibilities of mounting and partitioning.
This is all the more surprising as two weeks ago, I succeeded in installing
RH linux on my jaz drive and it worked well for two weeks (i decided to
reinstall it yesterday to change some partitioning). And i have the problem
described above.
Is there something I do wrong ?
Is there other possibilities of installing manually Linux (with other
distributions) ?

Thanks for your help

Weird. On newer systems, the CDROM is plugged into the primary
or secondary IDE controllers which almost always use irq 14 and
15 respectively. If you have an older cdrom which is plugged
into a sound card, you may have better luck moving it to an
IDE chain. That way, you'll free up the IRQ for the mouse.
